C1 Ambulance Training for Private Ambulance and Event Medical Staff

Overview

The private ambulance and event medical sector has grown significantly in recent years, driven by demand for patient transport, event medical cover, and non-emergency medical services. Whether you work for a private ambulance company, an event medical service, or a patient transport provider, a Category C1 driving licence is typically required if you drive ambulance vehicles over 3,500 kg.

Who Needs C1 in the Private Sector?

C1 is required for anyone driving a vehicle with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg in a professional capacity. In the private ambulance and event medical sector, this includes:

  • Private ambulance company drivers and crew
  • Patient transport service (PTS) drivers
  • Event medical staff who drive ambulance vehicles at concerts, festivals, sporting events, and public gatherings
  • Medical response company staff
  • Repatriation and medical escort drivers
  • Funeral directors who operate ambulance-style vehicles for deceased patient transport

Private Ambulance vs NHS: Licence Requirements

The licence requirements for private ambulance work are the same as for NHS work — C1 is required for vehicles in the 3,500–7,500 kg MAM range regardless of whether the employer is public or private. Private ambulance companies are regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and must ensure that all drivers hold the appropriate licence for the vehicles they operate.

Event Medical Work

Event medical providers — including companies such as St John Ambulance, British Red Cross, and specialist event medical firms — use a range of vehicles from cars to large ambulances. If your role involves driving a vehicle over 3,500 kg, you will need C1. Many event medical roles are voluntary or part-time, but the licence requirement applies regardless of employment status.

How to Get C1 for Private Ambulance Work

The process is identical to obtaining C1 for NHS work: D4 medical, provisional C1 entitlement, theory test, practical training, and practical test. For a full step-by-step guide, see: How to Get a C1 Licence for Ambulance Driving.
