What Is the CPC Module 4 Test?

The Module 4 test is part of the initial Driver CPC qualification. It is a practical demonstration test where you explain and show that you understand key safety checks and procedures needed for professional driving. This is not a normal on-road driving test — instead, you will be asked questions and practical scenarios covering vehicle safety, load security, and emergency procedures.

The aim is to show that you can operate safely, professionally, and responsibly as a commercial driver. The test lasts approximately 30 minutes and is conducted beside a stationary vehicle with a DVSA examiner. To pass, you must score at least 15 out of 20 (75%) in each topic area and achieve an overall score of 80% or higher.

If you want to drive professionally — whether HGV, LGV, bus, or coach — passing the Driver CPC Module 4 test is an essential step towards gaining your Driver Qualification Card (DQC), which you must carry at all times when driving commercially.

Who Needs the Module 4 Test?

You need the Driver CPC Module 4 test if you want to drive professionally and are gaining your qualification for the first time. This applies to anyone training for:

HGV / LGV Drivers

Class 1 (artic) and Class 2 (rigid) lorry drivers need Module 4 before working professionally.

What Happens in the Mod 4 Test?

During the test, the examiner will walk around a stationary vehicle with you, asking questions based on practical driving situations. You will be marked on five key areas:

Vehicle Safety Checks

Daily walk-round checks, identifying defects, and keeping the vehicle roadworthy. You may be asked to demonstrate or explain what you would check before starting a journey.

Loading and Security

How to keep loads secure, use load restraint equipment correctly, and reduce risks relating to illegal trafficking. You may need to demonstrate proper load securing techniques.

Emergency Situations

What to do in the event of an accident, emergency, or breakdown. You should know how to use safety equipment and follow correct procedures to protect yourself and others.

Driver Wellbeing and Risk Reduction

Safe lifting techniques, personal safety awareness, and avoiding unnecessary physical risk. The examiner wants to see that you understand how to look after yourself on the job.

Preventing Criminality

Security procedures for protecting the vehicle and cargo. You may be tested on how to prevent illegal immigrants from accessing the vehicle and how to secure it when unattended.

Module 4 Training as Part of Your HGV Course

Many drivers leave Module 4 until the last minute — and that is often where stress and delays start. We recommend preparing for CPC Mod 4 as part of your overall licence plan so that your progress stays smooth from start to finish.

If you are completing your Class 1, Class 2, C1, or other commercial vehicle training with us, we can help you fit Module 4 into the process properly. That means fewer delays, less stress, and a clearer route to getting qualified and working.

CPC Module 4 Frequently Asked Questions

Is the CPC Module 4 test hard?
Module 4 is much easier when you know what to expect. The test is based on practical safety knowledge rather than on-road driving, so proper preparation and coaching make a big difference. Our trainers walk you through every topic area so you feel confident on the day.
Do I need Module 4 for HGV driving?
Yes. If you want to drive professionally (lorries, buses, or coaches for work), the Module 4 test is part of gaining your initial Driver CPC qualification. Without it, you cannot obtain your Driver Qualification Card (DQC), which is a legal requirement for professional driving.
Is Module 4 a driving test?
No. Module 4 is a practical demonstration test, not an on-road driving test. You will be assessed on your knowledge of vehicle safety, load security, emergency procedures, and professional practice — all while standing beside a stationary vehicle with the examiner.
What score do I need to pass Module 4?
You must score at least 15 out of 20 (75%) in each of the five topic areas, plus an overall score of 80% or higher. The test lasts approximately 30 minutes and you receive your result immediately afterwards.
Can I do Module 4 with my HGV training?
Yes, and this is the approach we recommend. Including Module 4 as part of your overall HGV training plan means fewer delays and a smoother route to getting fully qualified. We offer combined packages that include CPC Module 4 alongside your Class 1, Class 2, or C1 training.
Do I need to pass Module 2 before Module 4?
Yes. You must pass the Driver CPC Module 2 (case studies theory test) before you can take Module 4. We can help you plan the order of your tests so that everything flows smoothly without unnecessary waiting time.
How much does CPC Module 4 cost at GS Driver Training?
Our CPC Module 4 training and test preparation starts from £350. When combined with an HGV training course, we offer discounted package rates. Contact us for a personalised quote based on your training needs.
Where does the Module 4 test take place?
The Module 4 test takes place at a DVSA-approved testing centre. We prepare you at our Surrey training centre in Guildford, ensuring you are fully ready before your test date. We can also advise on nearby test centre locations.
