Question 1

What is Driver CPC and who needs it?

Accepted Answer

Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) is a legal requirement for all professional lorry (category C) and bus/coach (category D) drivers in the UK. It was introduced under EU Directive 2003/59/EC and retained after Brexit. Without a valid CPC, you cannot drive professionally — even if you hold a valid HGV or PCV licence.

Question 2

How much does CPC training cost in 2026?

Accepted Answer

A single 7-hour CPC periodic training module typically costs £60–£90 per day. The full 35 hours (5 modules over 5 years) costs approximately £300–£450 in total. At GS Driver Training, we offer competitive CPC day rates with discounts for block bookings.

Question 3

How many hours of CPC training do I need?

Accepted Answer

You must complete 35 hours of approved periodic training every 5 years to maintain your Driver CPC. Training is delivered in blocks of at least 7 hours per day. You can spread the 35 hours across the full 5-year period — you do not need to complete them all at once.

Question 4

What happens if my CPC expires?

Accepted Answer

If your Driver CPC lapses, you cannot legally drive professionally. Your driving licence remains valid for personal use, but you will face a fine of up to £1,000 if caught driving for work without valid CPC. To reinstate it, you must complete all 35 hours of periodic training again.

Question 5

How do I check my CPC hours?

Accepted Answer

You can check your completed CPC hours online through the DVSA Driver CPC recording and evidence system. You will need your driving licence number to log in. Your employer can also check your record. Your Driver Qualification Card (DQC) shows your CPC expiry date.

Question 6

Can I drive a 7.5 tonne lorry without CPC?

Accepted Answer

If you are driving a 7.5t lorry (category C1) for commercial purposes — carrying goods for hire or reward — you need Driver CPC. However, there are exemptions for non-commercial use, vehicles used by the military, police, or fire service, and vehicles not exceeding 45 km/h.
