Question 1

Do I need a D1 licence to drive a minibus?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if you passed your car test after 1 January 1997 you need a separate D1 entitlement to drive a minibus (9–16 passenger seats) for hire or reward. Drivers who passed before that date have D1 on their licence automatically.

Question 2

How much does D1 minibus training cost in 2026?

Accepted Answer

D1 minibus training typically costs between £1,200 and £2,000 depending on the provider and course length. At GS Driver Training, our D1 course starts from £1,495 including DVSA test fees. Additional costs include the D4 medical (around £50–£100) and provisional D1 application.

Question 3

How long does D1 minibus training take?

Accepted Answer

Most candidates complete D1 training in 2–4 days of practical instruction, depending on prior driving experience. You must also pass a theory test (multiple choice + hazard perception) and a practical driving test with a DVSA examiner.

Question 4

What is the D1 minibus driving test like?

Accepted Answer

The D1 practical test lasts approximately 90 minutes and includes a vehicle safety check, reversing exercise, and around 60 minutes of on-road driving. The examiner assesses your ability to handle a minibus safely in various traffic conditions including dual carriageways and residential areas.

Question 5

Can I drive a minibus on a car licence?

Accepted Answer

You can drive a minibus (up to 16 seats) on a standard car licence only if it is not for hire or reward, the vehicle is under 3.5 tonnes MAM, you are over 21, and you have held your licence for at least 2 years. For any commercial or paid work, you need the D1 category.

Question 6

What is a Section 19 permit?

Accepted Answer

A Section 19 permit allows non-profit organisations (charities, schools, community groups) to charge passengers without needing a full PSV operator licence. Drivers still need to meet minimum age and licence requirements, and the vehicle must pass annual inspection.
