Driver CPC: Everything You Need to Know

What Is Driver CPC?

The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) is a qualification required by law for anyone who drives a lorry, bus, or coach professionally in the UK. It was introduced under EU Directive 2003/59/EC and has been retained in UK law after Brexit. The purpose is to ensure professional drivers maintain their skills and knowledge throughout their career.

If you drive a vehicle that requires a Category C, CE, C1, C1E, D, DE, D1, or D1E licence as part of your job, you need Driver CPC. If you only drive these vehicles for personal use (such as a motorhome or horse box), CPC is not required.

The 35-Hour Rule

You must complete 35 hours of approved periodic training every 5 years to maintain your Driver CPC. Training is delivered in blocks of at least 7 hours per day by JAUPT-approved training centres.

If you drive both lorries and buses professionally, you only need to complete one set of 35 hours — not 70. The training covers both entitlements.

Quick Facts

  • 35 hours every 5 years
  • Minimum 7 hours per training day
  • One set covers both LGV and PCV
  • Training valid for 5 years from course date
  • Fine up to £1,000 without valid CPC
