What Is the CPC Module 2 Test?

The CPC Module 2 test is a case studies theory test that forms part of the initial Driver CPC qualification. Unlike the standard HGV theory test (Module 1), which uses multiple choice questions, Module 2 presents you with real-world driving scenarios and asks you to demonstrate your understanding of the correct procedures, regulations, and professional practices.

The test is taken on a computer at a DVSA theory test centre. You will be given between 6 and 8 case studies, each describing a realistic professional driving situation. After reading each scenario, you answer between 5 and 10 questions about it. The total test has approximately 50 questions, and you have 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete it.

To pass, you need a score of at least 40 out of 50 (80%). You receive your result immediately after completing the test. Passing Module 2 is required before you can take the Module 4 practical demonstration test.

How case studies work

Each case study describes a scenario — for example, a delivery driver planning a route with specific time constraints, or a driver discovering a vehicle defect during a walk-round check. You then answer questions about the correct actions, legal requirements, and best practices for that situation.

What Topics Does Module 2 Cover?

The case studies draw from a wide range of professional driving topics. Here are the key areas you should prepare for:

Drivers' Hours & Tachographs

Scenarios involving EU and domestic drivers' hours rules, tachograph use, rest periods, and working time regulations. You will need to calculate legal driving and rest times based on real-world situations.

Vehicle Safety & Maintenance

Case studies about vehicle defects, daily walk-round checks, tyre safety, brake systems, and your legal responsibilities for keeping the vehicle roadworthy.

Loading & Load Security

Practical scenarios about securing loads correctly, weight distribution, overloading risks, and the legal consequences of improper loading.

Accidents & Emergencies

What to do at the scene of an accident, reporting requirements, use of warning triangles, and dealing with breakdowns on motorways and other roads.

Environmental & Fuel Efficiency

Scenarios covering fuel-efficient driving techniques, reducing emissions, noise pollution awareness, and the environmental impact of professional driving.

Professional Conduct & Regulations

Case studies about customer service, communication, legal requirements for professional drivers, and the responsibilities that come with holding a Driver CPC.

How to Prepare for CPC Module 2

Module 2 is different from a standard multiple choice test. The case study format requires you to understand and apply your knowledge to realistic scenarios. Here is how we recommend preparing:

Study drivers' hours rules thoroughly — these appear in almost every Module 2 test and require careful calculation
Practise with official DVSA case study materials — understanding the question format is just as important as knowing the content
Focus on understanding why answers are correct, not just memorising them — the scenarios change but the principles stay the same
Learn vehicle safety procedures, loading regulations, and accident reporting requirements in detail
Take timed practice tests to build confidence with the 1 hour 30 minute time limit
Read each case study carefully before answering — the details in the scenario often contain the clues you need

CPC Module 2 Frequently Asked Questions

What is the CPC Module 2 test?
The CPC Module 2 test is a case studies theory test that forms part of the initial Driver CPC qualification. It presents you with 6 to 8 real-world driving scenarios, each followed by 5 to 10 questions. You answer on a computer at a DVSA test centre. The test lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes and you need at least 40 out of 50 to pass.
How many questions are in the CPC Module 2 test?
The test contains between 6 and 8 case studies, with a total of approximately 50 questions across all scenarios. Each case study describes a realistic professional driving situation, and the questions test your understanding of the correct procedures, regulations, and best practices.
What is the pass mark for CPC Module 2?
You need to score at least 40 out of 50 (80%) to pass the CPC Module 2 test. The result is given immediately after you complete the test at the DVSA theory test centre.
How much does the CPC Module 2 test cost?
The DVSA fee for the CPC Module 2 test is currently £23. Our Module 2 preparation course is £65 inc. VAT, which includes structured study guidance and practice case studies. We also offer a combined Module 2 + Module 4 package at £350 inc. VAT for better value.
Do I need to pass Module 2 before Module 4?
Yes. You must pass the CPC Module 2 case studies test before you can take the Module 4 practical demonstration test. We recommend planning both tests as part of your overall training timeline to avoid unnecessary delays.
Is CPC Module 2 the same as the HGV theory test?
No. The HGV theory test (Module 1) is a separate multiple choice and hazard perception test. Module 2 is the CPC case studies test, which uses scenario-based questions rather than standard multiple choice. You need to pass both Module 1 (theory) and Module 2 (case studies) before your practical tests.
How should I revise for CPC Module 2?
Focus on understanding real-world driving scenarios rather than memorising answers. Study drivers' hours rules, vehicle safety procedures, loading regulations, and accident procedures. Practice with official DVSA case study materials and take timed practice tests. Our preparation course covers all the key topics.
Can I take Module 2 on the same day as my theory test?
You can book Module 1 (theory) and Module 2 (case studies) on the same day at the DVSA test centre, though they are booked and paid for separately. Some learners prefer to take them on different days to reduce pressure. We can advise on the best approach for your situation.
