Which CPC Training Do You Need?

Initial CPC (Module 4)

From £350

Required for new HGV drivers to legally drive professionally. Practical demonstration test at a DVSA centre. Often combined with your HGV training course.

Periodic CPC (35 hours)

From £350

Every professional driver must complete 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years. We offer flexible scheduling — complete all 35 hours or individual 7-hour modules.

Understanding the Driver CPC

The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) is a legal requirement for anyone who drives a lorry, bus, or coach for a living in the UK. It was introduced under EU Directive 2003/59/EC and remains a requirement post-Brexit. Without a valid CPC qualification card, you cannot legally work as a professional driver.

There are two parts to the CPC. The initial CPC (Module 2 theory + Module 4 practical demonstration) is taken when you first qualify. After that, you must complete 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years to keep your qualification card valid. This periodic training covers safety, efficiency, regulations, and professional standards.

At GS Driver Training, we offer both initial CPC as part of our HGV training packages and standalone periodic CPC modules. All our courses are JAUPT-approved and delivered by experienced instructors at our Surrey training centre.

Periodic CPC Training Modules

Complete 5 modules (7 hours each) over your 5-year cycle. Each module covers essential professional driving topics.

1
Safe and Fuel-Efficient Driving· 7 hours
2
Health, Safety & Emergency Procedures· 7 hours
3
Customer Service & Professional Standards· 7 hours
4
Vehicle Safety & Maintenance Awareness· 7 hours
5
Drivers' Hours & Working Time Regulations· 7 hours

Don't let your CPC expire

If your CPC qualification card expires, you cannot drive professionally until you complete all remaining hours. Plan ahead and spread your modules across the 5-year cycle.

Driver CPC Training FAQs

What is the Driver CPC and do I need it?
The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) is a legal requirement for anyone who drives a lorry, bus, or coach professionally in the UK. If you drive an HGV for work (not personal use), you must hold a valid Driver CPC qualification card alongside your driving licence.
What's the difference between initial CPC and periodic CPC?
Initial CPC (Module 4) is a one-off practical demonstration test you take when first qualifying as a professional driver. Periodic CPC is the ongoing requirement to complete 35 hours of approved training every 5 years to keep your CPC qualification card valid.
How much does CPC training cost in Surrey?
Our CPC training starts from £350. When combined with an HGV training course, we offer discounted package rates. Periodic CPC modules can be booked individually or as a complete 35-hour package.
What happens if my CPC expires?
If your Driver CPC qualification card expires, you cannot legally drive an HGV professionally until you complete the required 35 hours of periodic training and receive a new card. You won't lose your driving licence, but you cannot work as a professional driver.
Can I do CPC training alongside my HGV course?
Yes, and this is the most cost-effective approach. We offer combined HGV + CPC packages that include Module 4 (initial CPC) as part of your training. This means you leave fully qualified and ready to work immediately.
How long does periodic CPC training take?
You need to complete 35 hours of approved training over a 5-year period. Each module is 7 hours (one day), so you can spread the 5 modules across the 5 years or complete them all at once — whatever suits your schedule.
