Changing Career to HGV Driving: Why It Makes Sense
If you are in your 30s, 40s, or 50s and considering a career change, HGV driving is one of the most practical and rewarding options available. Unlike many career changes that require years of retraining or a return to education, you can be qualified and earning within weeks. Here is why it works and how to make it happen.
Why HGV Driving Is Perfect for Career Changers
- Fast qualification: From car licence to full HGV licence in 4–6 weeks, including theory and practical.
- No degree or prior experience needed: Your life experience and maturity are actually advantages in this profession.
- Immediate employment: With the ongoing driver shortage, most graduates find work within 2–4 weeks of qualifying.
- Competitive salary from day one: Starting salaries of £28,000–£40,000 for Class 1 and Class 2 drivers.
- Job security: Everything in the UK moves by road. HGV drivers will always be in demand.
- Age is not a barrier: Many of our students are in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. The average age of UK HGV drivers is over 50.
What Previous Career Changers Say
We have trained thousands of career changers at GS Driver Training. Common backgrounds include:
- Office workers looking for more active, independent work
- Construction workers seeking better pay and conditions
- Retail staff wanting more predictable hours and higher earnings
- Military veterans transitioning to civilian careers
- Self-employed tradespeople looking for steady income
- People made redundant who want a fresh start
The common thread is that these are people who wanted a practical career with good pay, job security, and the satisfaction of doing something tangible every day.
Realistic Salary Expectations
| Experience Level | Class 2 (Cat C) | Class 1 (Cat C+E) |
|---|---|---|
| Newly qualified | £28,000 – £32,000 | £32,000 – £38,000 |
| 1–2 years | £32,000 – £38,000 | £38,000 – £45,000 |
| 3+ years | £35,000 – £42,000 | £42,000 – £55,000+ |
These figures are for employed drivers. Agency work and owner-driver roles can pay significantly more, though with less predictability.
The Training Process
Here is a realistic timeline for a career changer:
- Week 1: Book your D4 medical and apply for provisional HGV entitlement.
- Weeks 2–4: Study for and pass your theory test while waiting for your provisional licence.
- Weeks 4–6: Complete intensive practical training and pass your driving test.
- Week 6: Complete your CPC Module 4 assessment.
- Weeks 7–8: Start applying for jobs (or register with agencies).
Many of our career-changing students are working as professional drivers within 8 weeks of their first enquiry.
Addressing Common Worries
“Am I too old?”
Absolutely not. We regularly train students in their 50s and 60s. As long as you can pass the medical, age is not a barrier. In fact, employers often prefer mature drivers for their reliability and life experience.
“Can I afford to retrain?”
With training starting from £847 inc VAT and finance options from £30/month, the investment is modest compared to most career changes. Read our guide to funding your HGV training for all available options.
“Will I be able to handle the vehicle?”
Modern HGV training uses automatic vehicles with power steering and air suspension. If you can drive a car, you can learn to drive a lorry. Our instructors are experienced at working with complete beginners.
