UK Fuel Prices Are Surging — What It Means for Driver Training Costs
If you have filled up a vehicle recently, you will already know the pain. UK diesel prices have risen for 40 consecutive days — the longest unbroken run of daily increases since records began in 2015. As of 10 April 2026, the average price of a litre of diesel stands at 191.31 pence, up a staggering 48.9p since the conflict in Iran began at the end of February. A full 55-litre tank of diesel now costs £105.22, roughly £27 more than it did just six weeks ago.
Petrol has not been spared either. Unleaded now averages 158.16p per litre — a 25.3p increase over the same period. According to the RAC, diesel jumped by 40p per litre in March alone, making it the fastest single-month rise ever recorded in the UK.
Why Are Fuel Prices Rising So Sharply?
The primary driver behind this surge is the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, which escalated in late February 2026. Iran’s near-closure of the Strait of Hormuz — a narrow waterway through which roughly 20 per cent of the world’s oil supply passes — has severely disrupted global energy markets. With tanker traffic restricted and supply chains under pressure, the price of Brent crude oil climbed to $99 per barrel in early April before easing slightly following ceasefire talks.
Although a two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran was announced in early April, Iran has so far refused to lift the Strait of Hormuz blockade, and economists have warned that fuel prices are unlikely to return to pre-conflict levels any time soon. Even if the ceasefire holds and shipping routes gradually reopen, the recovery of global oil supply chains will take months, not days.
How This Affects the Haulage and Transport Industry
The impact on the UK’s transport sector has been severe. The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has reported that many haulage operators are facing fuel cost increases of over 100 per cent compared to early 2026 levels. Over 2,000 haulage companies have gone bust in recent months, and those still operating have been forced to introduce fuel surcharges to stay afloat.
For fleet operators, the total cost of ownership for heavy goods vehicles has risen sharply. Diesel is the single largest variable cost in running an HGV, and with prices approaching the record high of 199p per litre reached earlier this year, margins across the logistics industry are being squeezed to breaking point.
What This Means for HGV Training Prices
Here is the reality that many prospective drivers do not yet realise: rising fuel costs directly affect the price of driver training. Every hour of practical HGV instruction burns significant amounts of diesel. A modern training truck uses between 15 and 25 litres per hour depending on the vehicle and route. When diesel costs nearly £2 per litre, the fuel bill for a single day of training can exceed £200.
Training providers across the UK are already absorbing these increased costs, but this cannot continue indefinitely. If diesel prices remain at current levels — or rise further — course prices will inevitably need to increase to reflect the higher operating costs. Some providers have already raised their fees, and more are expected to follow.
| Cost Factor | Before Conflict (Feb 2026) | Current (April 2026) | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diesel (per litre) | 142.4p | 191.3p | +48.9p (+34%) |
| Full tank (55L diesel) | £78.32 | £105.22 | +£26.90 |
| Brent Crude (per barrel) | ~$75 | ~$90–$99 | +20–32% |
| Petrol (per litre) | 132.9p | 158.2p | +25.3p (+19%) |
Why You Should Book Your Training Now
At GS Driver Training, we have not yet increased our course prices. Our current rates — starting from £847 inc. VAT for HGV Class 2 training — still reflect pre-crisis fuel costs. However, we cannot guarantee how long we will be able to hold these prices if diesel remains above 190p per litre.
By booking now, you can lock in today’s prices before any adjustments take effect. This is not a sales tactic — it is a straightforward reflection of the economic reality facing every training provider in the country. The longer fuel prices stay elevated, the more pressure there is on course fees.
Here is what you get when you book with GS Driver Training at current prices:
- All-inclusive pricing — DVSA test fees, training, and vehicle hire included
- Modern automatic DAF fleet — no struggling with manual gearboxes
- Both male and female instructors available
- 7-time award winner — Best HGV Training Company for 7 consecutive years
- Flexible finance from £30/month — spread the cost without waiting
- High first-time pass rates — fewer retakes means lower total cost
The Opportunity Behind the Crisis
There is a silver lining to the fuel price crisis for anyone considering a career in transport. The ongoing HGV driver shortage means that qualified drivers are in higher demand than ever. With over 2,000 haulage companies closing and remaining operators desperate for drivers, starting salaries for newly qualified Class 2 drivers now range from £28,000 to £35,000, with experienced Class 1 drivers earning £40,000 to £55,000 or more.
Rising fuel costs are also driving up haulage rates, which in turn supports higher driver wages. Companies that survive this period will need more drivers, not fewer, and those who qualify now will be in the strongest position to benefit.
Do Not Wait for Prices to Drop
The ceasefire between the US and Iran remains fragile, and even in the best-case scenario, analysts expect it will take several months for fuel prices to return to anything close to pre-conflict levels. The Strait of Hormuz blockade continues, global oil supply remains disrupted, and the knock-on effects on wholesale fuel costs will persist well into the second half of 2026.
Every week you wait is a week closer to potential price increases across the training industry. If you have been thinking about getting your HGV, C1, PCV, or CPC qualification, now is the time to act.
