Your Route to Becoming a Qualified HGV Driver

Becoming an HGV driver is one of the best career moves you can make. With a national driver shortage, strong wages, and genuine job security, professional driving offers a rewarding career for people of all backgrounds and ages. Whether you are looking for a complete career change or your first professional qualification, this guide covers everything you need to know.

The process involves 7 clear steps — from applying for your provisional licence through to receiving your Driver Qualification Card (DQC). Most learners complete the full process in 6–12 weeks, depending on how quickly they can schedule their tests and training. At GS Driver Training, we guide you through every step.

You do not need any previous HGV experience to get started. All you need is a full UK car licence, to be at least 18 years old, and the motivation to learn. We handle the rest.

7 Steps to Your HGV Licence

Follow these steps in order to go from car licence holder to fully qualified professional HGV driver.

1

Get Your Provisional HGV Licence

You must hold a full UK car licence (Category B) and be at least 18 years old. Apply for a provisional HGV licence through the DVLA using form D2 and a D4 medical certificate. The medical costs between £50 and £120 and must be completed by a registered doctor.

2

Pass the HGV Theory Test (Module 1)

The theory test has two parts: 100 multiple choice questions (pass mark 85/100) and a hazard perception test (19 clips, pass mark 67/100). Both parts are taken on the same day at a DVSA theory test centre. The total DVSA fee is £37.

3

Pass the CPC Case Studies Test (Module 2)

Module 2 is a computer-based case studies test with 6–8 real-world driving scenarios and approximately 50 questions. You need 40 out of 50 (80%) to pass. The DVSA fee is £23. This tests your understanding of professional driving regulations and procedures.

4

Complete Your Practical HGV Training

This is where you learn to drive an HGV with a qualified instructor. Training typically takes 1–2 weeks depending on the licence category. You will learn vehicle handling, manoeuvring, road driving, and reversing. GS Driver Training provides all training in our own fleet of modern vehicles.

5

Pass the Practical Driving Test (Module 3)

The on-road driving test lasts approximately 90 minutes and includes a vehicle safety check, reversing exercise, and road driving. You will drive on a variety of roads including dual carriageways. The DVSA fee is £115.

6

Pass the CPC Practical Demonstration (Module 4)

The final step is a practical demonstration of your professional knowledge. You will be assessed on vehicle safety, load security, emergency procedures, and driver wellbeing. The test lasts about 30 minutes and the DVSA fee is £55.

7

Receive Your Driver Qualification Card (DQC)

Once you have passed all four modules, the DVSA will issue your Driver Qualification Card. This, combined with your full HGV licence, qualifies you to drive professionally. Your DQC is valid for 5 years, after which you need to complete 35 hours of periodic CPC training to renew it.

Which HGV Licence Do You Need?

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about becoming an HGV driver, training costs, and career prospects.

How long does it take to become an HGV driver?
The full process from application to qualified driver typically takes 6–12 weeks, depending on how quickly you can book your medical, theory test, and training dates. The practical training itself usually takes 1–2 weeks. Some learners complete the process faster with our fast-track packages.
How much does it cost to become an HGV driver?
The total cost varies depending on the licence category, but a typical Class 2 (Category C) qualification costs between £2,000 and £3,000 including medical, DVSA test fees, and training. Class 1 (C+E) costs more due to additional training time. We offer finance options to spread the cost.
Can I become an HGV driver with no experience?
Yes. Most of our students start with no HGV experience at all — just a full UK car licence. Our training is designed for complete beginners and we take you through every step from provisional licence application to passing your final test.
What age do I need to be to drive an HGV?
You must be at least 18 years old to hold an HGV licence in the UK. There is no upper age limit, but you will need to pass a D4 medical examination. Drivers over 45 need more frequent medical renewals.
Is HGV driving a good career?
HGV driving offers strong earning potential, job security, and flexibility. Qualified Class 1 drivers can earn £35,000–£55,000+ per year, and there is a significant driver shortage in the UK meaning demand for qualified drivers remains very high.
Do I need a CPC to drive an HGV?
If you drive an HGV professionally — meaning it is the main part of your job — then yes, you need a Driver CPC in addition to your HGV licence. This involves passing four modules (theory, case studies, practical driving, and practical demonstration) and then completing 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years.
Can I get funding for HGV training?
There are several funding options available. Some employers sponsor training for new drivers, and there are government-backed schemes and apprenticeships. We also offer finance agreements to spread the cost of training over manageable monthly payments.
What is the difference between Class 1 and Class 2?
Class 2 (Category C) covers rigid lorries — vehicles where the cab and cargo area are on the same chassis. Class 1 (Category C+E) covers articulated vehicles — a tractor unit pulling a separate trailer. Class 1 is the higher qualification and generally commands higher wages.
