What is an HGV Class 2 (Category C) Licence and Why It Matters in 2026
If you've ever looked up from the inside lane and wondered what it takes to command a rigid lorry, you're in the right place. At GS Driver Training, we turn that curiosity into confidence—first through our HGV Driving Experience at Dunsfold Aerodrome, Cranleigh (home of Top Gear) and then through structured Category C and C+E courses.
Why Choose an HGV Career Right Now?
The UK's road freight industry is the backbone of its economy, keeping goods moving across the nation. Professional HGV drivers enjoy clear progression, varied work, and the satisfaction of mastering serious machinery. With a persistent driver shortage, estimated at 18,000–25,000 in 2026 (down from a peak of 70,000+ in 2021), there's never been a better time to enter the profession. Newly qualified Class 2 drivers can expect salaries between £28,000 and £35,000, while experienced Class 1 drivers can earn £40,000–£55,000 annually. If you like practical skills, problem-solving, and independence, then HGV driving is a strong fit.
Why GS Driver Training?
Most importantly, we offer real trucks, real coaching, and real routes. You'll train on well-maintained DAF vehicles, practise on realistic manoeuvring areas, and learn with experienced instructors who coach in bite-size, actionable steps. As a result, first-timers and career changers progress calmly and consistently. We've been voted Best HGV Training Company for 7 consecutive years, a testament to our commitment to excellence.
Train Where You'll Love Driving
Specifically, our HGV Driving Experience runs at Dunsfold Aerodrome—an iconic, private location that's perfect for confidence building. Typically, sessions run most weekdays with selected weekends, with 45-minute or 60-minute options. Furthermore, vouchers are instant e-delivery and valid for 12 months, which makes them ideal gifts or pre-course tasters.
Your HGV Class 2 (Category C) Training Path: Simple and Clear
Step 1: Meet the Requirements
- Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
- Driving Licence: Hold a full UK car driving licence.
- Medical: Pass a D4 medical examination. This typically costs £50–£120.
- Provisional Entitlement: Apply for the correct provisional HGV entitlement on your licence.
Step 2: Pass Your HGV Theory Tests
Before you can get behind the wheel of a lorry for practical training, you'll need to pass three theory tests:
- Part 1a: Multiple Choice: Costing £26, this tests your knowledge of road safety and vehicle operation.
- Part 1b: Hazard Perception: Priced at £11, this assesses your ability to spot developing hazards on the road.
- Part 2: Case Studies: At £23, this test uses real-life scenarios to evaluate your understanding of safe and efficient driving practices.
GS Driver Training offers comprehensive support and resources to help you prepare for your HGV theory test.
Step 3: Practical Training and Test
Our courses blend vehicle familiarisation (controls, safety systems, mirror discipline), low-speed mastery (precision steering, clutch/creep, observation routines), reversing and manoeuvres (including off-road test elements), road driving (planning, hazard perception, eco-driving), and safety and compliance (walk-round checks, load basics, tachograph use). When ready, you'll take the off-road (3a) and on-road (3b) tests. The HGV practical test (Part 3b) costs £115 on a weekday or £141 on an evening/weekend. Crucially, we schedule smartly so you carry momentum from training to pass day.

Step 4: Driver CPC Qualification (if driving professionally)
If you intend to drive an HGV professionally, you'll need to obtain your Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC). This involves:
- Module 2: Practical Demonstration of Knowledge: This is a computer-based test covering practical scenarios. You can find more information on our CPC Module 2 test page.
- Module 4: Practical Demonstration: This hands-on test assesses your ability to carry out daily vehicle checks and other practical tasks. The CPC Part 4 practical demonstration costs £55 on a weekday or £63 on an evening/weekend. Learn more about our CPC Module 4 test.
Once qualified, you'll need to complete 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years to maintain your Driver CPC, with sessions typically costing £150–£200 per 7-hour session. Explore our Driver CPC courses.
HGV Class 2 vs. Class 1: What's the Difference?
Understanding the distinction between Class 2 and Class 1 is crucial for your career path:
- Category C (Class 2): This licence allows you to drive rigid vehicles over 3,500 kg MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass) with a trailer up to 750 kg. This is often the most popular entry point into HGV driving.
- Category C+E (Class 1): This is the highest HGV licence, allowing you to drive articulated or drawbar combinations (lorries with trailers over 750 kg). This suits drivers aiming for trunking and long-haul work.
Many learners benefit from starting with Cat C first, while others target C+E directly. If you're unsure, tell us your goals—local work, long-distance, or sector preferences—and we'll recommend the best starting point. We offer comprehensive HGV Class 1 (Cat C+E) training.
Not Sure Yet? Start with an HGV Experience Day
Alternatively, begin with a one-hour guided drive in a 44-tonne DAF at Dunsfold. Soon, you'll practise smooth starts, tight turns, and progressive braking and—time permitting—a taste of reversing. Almost always, guests leave with a big-truck grin and a clearer sense of whether HGV life fits.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How long does HGV Class 2 training take?
Generally, it depends on your starting point and how quickly you learn. However, we tailor an intensive or paced plan to fit your schedule, aiming for efficient and effective training.

No—it runs on private ground at Dunsfold Aerodrome, providing a safe and controlled environment for your first taste of HGV driving.
Are GS Driver Training vouchers flexible?
Yes—they're instant e-vouchers and valid for 12 months, making them a convenient and flexible option for gifts or pre-course tasters.
