Why NHS Applicants Need C1
The majority of NHS frontline ambulances in the UK are large van-based vehicles with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg. This weight range falls under Category C1. A standard car (Category B) licence does not cover these vehicles. Most NHS ambulance trusts list a full C1 licence as an essential requirement for student paramedic, emergency medical technician (EMT), and patient transport service (PTS) roles.
Obtaining your C1 licence before applying to an NHS trust removes a conditional requirement from your application and demonstrates commitment to the profession.
Which NHS Roles Require C1?
| Role | C1 Requirement |
|---|---|
| Student Paramedic | Essential (most trusts) |
| Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) | Essential |
| Patient Transport Service (PTS) Driver | Essential |
| Ambulance Care Assistant | Essential |
| Community First Responder | Category B usually sufficient |
| Clinical Team Leader / Paramedic (experienced) | Essential (if not already held) |
Always check the specific job description for the trust you are applying to, as requirements can vary. Where C1 is listed as "desirable" rather than "essential", having it will still give you a competitive advantage.
Will the NHS Pay for My C1 Training?
Some NHS ambulance trusts offer a training bursary or will fund C1 training for successful applicants as part of their onboarding process. However, many trusts expect candidates to arrive with C1 already in place. If you are applying for a student paramedic role, check whether your university programme offers any support — NHS Learning Support Fund payments may be available to eligible students.
Funding availability varies between trusts and changes over time. Contact the trust's HR department directly to ask about current funding arrangements.
How Long Does It Take to Get C1?
From starting the D4 medical to holding a full C1 licence typically takes six to twelve weeks. If you are planning to apply to an NHS trust, aim to start the C1 process at least three months before your intended application date to allow for any delays.
