Top Tips for Completing Your HGV Training

Welcome to GS Driver Training, your gateway to a rewarding career in HGV driving. Our HGV training programs are designed to provide you with the expertise and confidence necessary to excel in this dynamic industry. Whether you’re just starting your journey or looking to upgrade your skills, our training is tailored to meet your needs.

Research the Process

Before you even think about booking your HGV training, you need to spend time researching the process. Read up about the different courses and reviews of HGV training centres. Ensure you understand the process of gaining your HGV licence, from attending a medical with the DVLA to completing the required theory and practical HGV training. Remember to check the costs associated with each process stage, too, as this will help you plan your budget. For a comprehensive overview of our offerings, browse all our HGV Courses.

How Long Does it Take to Get an HGV Licence?

HGV training to become an HGV Driver can take anywhere between 4 and 12 weeks from start to finish. The process starts with attending an HGV medical and completing the required paperwork to get the entitlement. While waiting for your provisional, starting your theory preparation is a good idea. Studying for the theory can take about 20 hours to cover everything you need to pass the tests.

All is done before starting your Practical HGV training. Once your provisional has been approved, you can book your theory tests, or if they are included in your package, then call the HGV driving School to set your theory test dates. If you have put in the time and training, you should pass your theory tests. If you don’t, you must retake them until you pass. Then, it’s time to set a date for your practical HGV training.

HGV Training

This practice covers reversing, coupling and uncoupling, loading and unloading, and rounds of predetermined routes, amongst other things. The final stage in the process is the full on-road driving test, again conducted by a DVSA examiner. Certificates are issued once the test has been completed, and drivers can officially become HGV Drivers.

Find the Right HGV Driving School

If you’re looking for the right HGV driving school, there are a few essential factors to consider. Cost, reviews and travel time are all key considerations when choosing the right School. It’s important to research prices and read other students’ reviews to ensure you get the best education possible. Additionally, it’s essential to factor in travel time as some schools may be further away than others. Considering these factors, you can find the perfect HGV driving school that meets your needs and budget.

Be Prepared

In the digital age, studying online has become a great way to stay ahead of the curve and be prepared for any situation. With a wide range of online information, you can easily find something that fits your needs and interests, whether looking for tips for the HGV training questions or seeing what to expect for your CPC practice HGV test.

Studying online provides flexibility and convenience that traditional learning methods cannot match. You can access course material from anywhere in the world with an internet connection, allowing you to study at your own pace and schedule. Additionally, many courses offer interactive elements such as quizzes and simulations, which help reinforce learning engagingly.

This could help you the most. Good HGV training providers will cover everything you need to pass your driving exams.

Is Passing the HGV Test Difficult?

Yes is the short answer. Passing with the proper training and preparation for your test is possible. We have helped hundreds of people achieve the HGV licence. All our instructors are dedicated to helping you get to the required standard. There is no such thing as one size or length that fits all. We understand that everybody has different needs and skill levels, so we offer different course lengths. Can I go directly to Class 1 HGV?

Can I go Directly to Class 1 HGV?

Yes, it is possible to go directly to Class 1 HGV. But is it right for you? HGV training companies have had to move with the DVSA rules and regulations and stay updated with how they offer training. If you know your driving is not the best, and you are not confident, don’t go straight to the most challenging test. Build your way up; you will feel much better and more confident.

But, on the other hand, if you are confident and like a challenge, go straight to the top. Don’t do it to save money, as you will probably spend more than if you just picked the right course in the first place. Listen to the advice that’s on offer.

Why HGV Driving Matters

The heavy goods vehicle industry is the backbone of our economy, ensuring goods are delivered efficiently and on time. In 2026, despite a peak shortage of 100,000 drivers in 2021, the industry still faces a deficit of approximately 18,000–25,000 HGV drivers. This ongoing demand means skilled HGV drivers play a vital role, and the need for well-trained professionals continues to grow. Newly qualified Class 2 drivers can expect salaries between £28,000–£35,000, while experienced Class 1 drivers can command salaries ranging from £40,000 to £55,000 annually.
