Overview
The C1 theory test is a mandatory stage in obtaining a Category C1 driving licence. It must be passed before you can sit the C1 practical driving test. The test consists of two parts: a multiple-choice section and a hazard perception section. Both must be passed in the same sitting. This guide explains exactly what to expect and how to prepare effectively.
Theory Test Format
| Part | Questions | Pass Mark | Time Allowed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice | 100 questions from the LGV question bank | 85 out of 100 | 115 minutes |
| Hazard perception | 19 video clips | 67 out of 100 | No fixed time limit |
What Topics Are Covered?
The C1 theory test covers the same topics as the full Category C (HGV) theory test. Key areas include the Highway Code, vehicle safety, driving in adverse conditions, tachograph rules, environmental considerations, accident procedures, and drivers' hours. For a detailed breakdown of topics, see: C1 Theory Test for Ambulance Drivers: What to Expect.
How to Book
The C1 theory test is booked through the DVSA website at gov.uk/book-theory-test. You must have provisional C1 entitlement on your licence before booking. The test costs £26.
How to Prepare
Most candidates need two to four weeks of regular study. Recommended resources include the DVSA's official LGV theory test guide, the Highway Code, and Theory Test Pro. Pay particular attention to the hazard perception section — click as soon as you see a hazard developing, not when it has fully developed.
What Happens If I Fail?
If you fail either part, you must retake the entire test. There is no limit on retakes, but you must wait at least three clear working days between attempts. The retake fee is £26.
