Overview
A Category C1 driving licence is a UK driving licence entitlement that allows you to drive vehicles with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg, with a trailer of up to 750 kg. It is commonly referred to as the "7.5 tonne licence" because 7,500 kg is the upper weight limit of the category. C1 sits between a standard car licence (Category B, up to 3,500 kg) and a full HGV licence (Category C, over 7,500 kg).
What Vehicles Can You Drive with a C1 Licence?
A C1 licence covers a wide range of vehicles in everyday use:
| Vehicle Type | Typical MAM | C1 Required? |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes Sprinter ambulance | 3,500–5,000 kg | Yes |
| Large motorhome (A-class or coachbuilt) | 3,500–7,500 kg | Yes |
| Horsebox (4–6 horses) | 3,500–7,500 kg | Yes |
| 7.5 tonne delivery truck | Up to 7,500 kg | Yes |
| Patient transport vehicle | 3,500–7,500 kg | Yes |
| Standard Transit van (3.5 tonne) | Up to 3,500 kg | No — Category B sufficient |
Do I Already Have C1 on My Licence?
If you passed your car test before 1 January 1997, you may already have automatic C1 entitlement on your licence. Check the back of your photocard licence for the C1 category. If it appears with a start date before 1 January 1997, you have the entitlement. If it shows code 79, there may be a restriction — check the DVLA's guidance or contact them directly.
If you passed your car test on or after 1 January 1997, you will not have automatic C1 entitlement and must obtain it through the standard process.
How Do I Get a C1 Licence?
The process involves five steps: D4 medical examination, provisional C1 entitlement application, C1 theory test, practical C1 driver training, and C1 practical driving test. For a full step-by-step guide, see: How to Get a C1 Licence: Step-by-Step Guide.
What Is the Difference Between C1 and C (Class 2 HGV)?
Category C1 covers vehicles up to 7,500 kg MAM. Category C (Class 2 HGV) covers vehicles over 7,500 kg MAM. If you want to drive a full-size lorry or HGV, you need a Category C licence. For a detailed comparison, see: C1 vs C Licence: What Is the Difference?
