The Complete Guide to ADR Training in the UK (2026)

ADR training is the gateway to some of the highest-paying driving roles in the UK. Drivers who are certified to transport dangerous goods command significant salary premiums over standard HGV drivers. This guide covers everything you need to know about ADR training and certification in 2026 — what ADR covers, the different classes, costs, renewal, and how to get certified.

What Is ADR?

ADR stands for “Accord européen relatif au transport international des marchandises Dangereuses par Route” — the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road. In the UK, ADR regulations have been retained in domestic law following Brexit and continue to govern the transport of hazardous materials by road.

ADR certification is required for drivers who transport dangerous goods above certain quantity thresholds. The certification demonstrates that the driver has been trained in the safe handling, loading, and transport of hazardous materials.

What Goods Require ADR Certification?

ADR covers a wide range of hazardous materials, classified into nine main classes:

ClassType of Dangerous GoodsExamples
Class 1ExplosivesFireworks, ammunition
Class 2GasesLPG, oxygen, aerosols
Class 3Flammable liquidsPetrol, diesel, solvents
Class 4Flammable solidsMatches, metal powders
Class 5Oxidising substances and organic peroxidesHydrogen peroxide, fertilisers
Class 6Toxic and infectious substancesPesticides, medical waste
Class 7Radioactive materialMedical isotopes, nuclear waste
Class 8Corrosive substancesAcids, batteries
Class 9Miscellaneous dangerous substancesDry ice, lithium batteries, asbestos

ADR Certificate Types

ADR certificates are issued for specific classes and types of transport. The main certificate types are:

  • Core (General) Certificate: Required for all ADR drivers. Covers the general principles of dangerous goods transport.
  • Class-specific certificates: Additional modules for specific classes (e.g., Class 1 explosives, Class 7 radioactive materials).
  • Tank certificate: Required for drivers transporting dangerous goods in tanks (e.g., fuel tankers, chemical tankers).

Most drivers start with the core certificate plus the tank certificate, which covers the majority of fuel and chemical transport roles.

ADR Training: What to Expect

ADR training is delivered by approved training providers and consists of classroom-based instruction followed by a written examination. The training covers:

  • ADR regulations and legal requirements
  • Classification of dangerous goods
  • Packaging, labelling, and placarding requirements
  • Documentation (transport documents, written instructions)
  • Vehicle requirements and equipment
  • Loading, unloading, and stowage
  • Emergency procedures
  • Driver responsibilities and liability

The core ADR course typically takes three to four days. Adding a tank module extends the course by one to two days.

ADR Examination and Certification

At the end of the training, you must pass a written examination administered by an approved examination body. The examination consists of multiple-choice questions. If you pass, you receive an ADR certificate issued by the DVLA, which is valid for five years.

The certificate is a credit-card-sized document similar to the Driver CPC card. You must carry it when transporting dangerous goods and produce it on request from enforcement officers.

ADR Training Costs in 2026

ADR Renewal

ADR certificates are valid for five years. To renew your certificate, you must complete a renewal training course and pass the examination again. The renewal course is shorter than the initial course — typically one to two days — as it focuses on updates to the regulations and refreshing your knowledge.

It is important to renew before your certificate expires. If your ADR certificate lapses, you must complete the full initial training course again.

ADR Driver Salary Premium

ADR certification commands a significant salary premium over standard HGV driving roles:

  • Standard Class 1 driver: £32,000 – £45,000
  • Class 1 driver with ADR (core): £38,000 – £50,000
  • Class 1 driver with ADR (tank): £42,000 – £60,000+
  • Fuel tanker driver: £45,000 – £65,000+

The return on investment for ADR training is exceptional — the cost of certification is typically recovered within the first month of working in an ADR role.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an HGV licence before getting ADR?

Yes. ADR certification is an additional qualification on top of your HGV licence — it does not replace it. You must hold the appropriate HGV licence category for the vehicle you will be driving before you can apply ADR certification to that vehicle type.

How long does ADR training take?

The core ADR course takes three to four days. Adding a tank or class-specific module adds one to two days. The full core plus tank course typically takes four to five days in total.

Is ADR the same as a hazmat licence?

ADR is the UK and European standard for dangerous goods transport by road. “Hazmat” is an American term. In the UK, ADR certification is what you need to transport hazardous materials professionally.

Can I get ADR if I only have a Class 2 licence?

Yes. ADR certification is available for all HGV licence categories, including Class 2 (Cat C). The ADR certificate covers the driver, not the vehicle type, so you can hold ADR certification for the vehicles you are licensed to drive.

What jobs require ADR certification?

ADR certification is required for roles including fuel tanker driver, chemical tanker driver, LPG delivery driver, pharmaceutical distribution driver, and any role transporting dangerous goods above the ADR threshold quantities. Major employers of ADR-certified drivers include Hoyer Petrolog, Suttons Tankers, Univar Solutions, and Brenntag.

How do I find ADR driving jobs?

ADR driving jobs are advertised on the main job boards (Indeed, Reed, CV-Library) and through specialist tanker driving agencies. Once you have your ADR certificate, update your CV to prominently list your ADR classes and tank certification. Many ADR employers actively recruit from training providers, so informing your training provider that you are seeking work can also generate leads.

What is the difference between ADR core and ADR tank?

The ADR core (general) certificate covers the transport of dangerous goods in packages — for example, drums, IBC containers, and small containers. The ADR tank certificate additionally covers the transport of dangerous goods in fixed tanks (e.g., fuel tankers, chemical tankers). Most high-paying ADR roles require the tank certificate in addition to the core certificate.

Can I transport lithium batteries without ADR?

It depends on the quantity and packaging. Lithium batteries are classified as Class 9 dangerous goods under ADR. Small quantities in retail packaging may be exempt. However, bulk shipments of lithium batteries (e.g., for electric vehicles or industrial use) typically require ADR certification. Check the specific exemption thresholds in the ADR regulations or consult a dangerous goods safety adviser.

What happens if I drive without a valid ADR certificate?

Driving without a valid ADR certificate when transporting dangerous goods above the exempt quantities is a criminal offence. Penalties include fines of up to £5,000, prohibition notices (preventing you from driving), and in serious cases, prosecution. Your employer can also face significant penalties. Always ensure your ADR certificate is current before accepting a load of dangerous goods.

Is ADR training available online?

ADR training is primarily classroom-based due to the practical nature of the subject matter and the requirement for a supervised written examination. Some providers offer blended learning with online pre-study materials, but the examination must be completed in person at an approved examination centre. Be cautious of providers claiming to offer fully online ADR certification.

ADR Roles: What to Expect on the Job

Understanding what ADR driving roles actually involve day-to-day helps you decide whether this career path is right for you.

Fuel Tanker Driver

Fuel tanker drivers deliver petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel to filling stations, airports, and industrial sites. The role involves early starts (many deliveries are made before stations open), strict safety protocols, and significant responsibility. Pay is typically £45,000 to £65,000+. Employers include Hoyer Petrolog, Certas Energy, and Greenergy.

Chemical Tanker Driver

Chemical tanker drivers transport industrial chemicals, food-grade liquids, and pharmaceutical ingredients. The role requires detailed knowledge of the specific chemicals being transported and strict adherence to safety procedures. Pay is typically £40,000 to £55,000+.

LPG Delivery Driver

LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) drivers deliver bottled and bulk gas to domestic, commercial, and industrial customers. The role requires Class 2 gas ADR certification. Employers include Calor Gas, Flogas, and Avanti Gas. Pay is typically £35,000 to £45,000.

ADR Renewal: Keeping Your Certification Current

ADR certificates are valid for five years. To renew your ADR certification, you must complete a refresher training course and pass the relevant ADR exams before your current certificate expires. There is no grace period — if your certificate expires, you must complete the full initial training again rather than a refresher course.

ADR refresher training typically takes two to three days (compared to four to five days for initial training) and costs £300 to £600 depending on the number of classes covered. Book your refresher course at least three months before your certificate expiry date to allow time for exam scheduling.

ADR and Salary: How Much More Can You Earn?

ADR certification commands a significant salary premium in the UK haulage industry. The exact premium depends on the classes covered and the employer, but typical figures in 2026 are:

Driver TypeAverage Annual Salary
Standard HGV Class 1 driver£32,000 – £38,000
ADR driver (flammable liquids/gases)£38,000 – £45,000
ADR driver (explosives/radioactive)£42,000 – £52,000
Tanker driver with ADR£40,000 – £55,000

Many ADR roles also include additional benefits such as enhanced overtime rates, night shift premiums, and specialist vehicle allowances.

ADR Training: Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an HGV licence to do ADR training?

No. ADR certification is a separate qualification from your driving licence. You can complete ADR training and sit the exams regardless of what driving licence you hold. However, to drive an HGV carrying dangerous goods professionally, you will need both an HGV licence and ADR certification.

How many ADR exams are there?

The number of exams depends on which classes you are training for. The core module exam covers general ADR requirements. Each additional class (e.g., Class 2 gases, Class 3 flammable liquids) requires a separate exam. Most candidates sit two to four exams in total.

What happens if I fail an ADR exam?

You can resit ADR exams. There is no limit on the number of resits, but each resit incurs an additional exam fee. Your training provider will advise on the resit process and any additional preparation needed.

Is ADR training available online?

Some ADR training providers offer blended learning with online theory modules, but the practical elements and exams must be completed in person. Fully online ADR certification is not available. Be cautious of providers claiming to offer fully online ADR training.

What is a Kemler code?

A Kemler code (also called a hazard identification number or HIN) is a two or three-digit number displayed on the orange hazard plate on ADR vehicles. The first digit indicates the primary hazard and subsequent digits indicate secondary hazards. ADR drivers must be able to interpret Kemler codes to understand the hazards of the goods they are carrying.

Do I need ADR training to carry fuel in a van?

Small quantities of fuel (up to 1,000 litres in approved containers) can be carried without ADR certification under limited quantity exemptions. However, if you regularly carry fuel above these thresholds, ADR Class 3 certification is required. Check the specific thresholds with the DVSA for your vehicle type and load.

What is a Tremcard?

A Tremcard (Transport Emergency Card) is a document that must be carried in the cab of an ADR vehicle. It provides emergency services with information about the dangerous goods being carried, including the hazards, emergency procedures, and first aid measures. Tremcards must be specific to the goods being transported.
