How Much Does ADR Training Cost in the UK?
The cost of getting an ADR licence in the UK in 2026 depends on how many hazard classes you need to cover and whether you are training for tank or packages (or both). A single-class ADR course covering one hazard class typically costs between £350 and £500. A full multi-class ADR course covering all nine hazard classes typically costs between £900 and £1,400. These figures include training, DVSA written examination fees, and the ADR card application fee.
ADR Cost Breakdown
The total cost of an ADR licence consists of three components: training fees, DVSA examination fees, and the ADR card fee.
| Component | Typical Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Training (single class) | £300–£450 | One hazard class, packages or tank |
| Training (full multi-class) | £750–£1,100 | All nine classes, packages and tank |
| DVSA written exams | £55–£220 | £55 per module; core + class modules required |
| ADR card application (DVLA) | £65 | Paid to DVLA; valid 5 years |
| Total (single class) | £420–£590 | Approximate all-in cost |
| Total (full multi-class) | £870–£1,385 | Approximate all-in cost |
DVSA Examination Fees
The DVSA charges £55 per written examination module. Every ADR candidate must pass the core module (covering general requirements, documentation, placarding, and emergency procedures) plus at least one class-specific module. A driver training for a single class therefore sits two exams (core + class) at a combined DVSA cost of £110. A driver training for all nine classes sits multiple class modules in addition to the core, which can add up to £220 or more in DVSA fees alone.
ADR Card Fee
Once you have passed all required DVSA modules, you apply to the DVLA for your ADR card (also called the ADR vocational licence). The DVLA charges £65 for the card, which is valid for five years. Renewal at the five-year mark requires re-sitting the relevant DVSA examinations and paying the £65 card fee again.
What Affects the Price?
Several factors influence the total cost of ADR training. The number of hazard classes you need is the biggest driver — each additional class adds training time and at least one more DVSA exam. Tank training (for drivers carrying dangerous goods in tanks) is more expensive than packages training because it covers additional technical requirements. The training provider’s location and reputation also affect price; London-based providers typically charge more than those in the South East or Midlands. GS Driver Training offers ADR courses in Surrey and Hampshire at competitive rates.
Is ADR Training Tax Deductible?
If you are self-employed as an HGV driver, ADR training costs are generally allowable as a business expense against your income tax liability, provided the training is wholly and exclusively for business purposes. Employed drivers should check with their employer whether training costs are reimbursed; many haulage companies fund ADR training for drivers they wish to assign to hazardous goods routes.
