Category C1+E Licence Explained

What is a Category C1+E licence?

Category C1+E covers a Category C1 vehicle towing a trailer over 750kg maximum authorised mass (MAM), where the combined MAM of vehicle and trailer is no more than 12,000kg. Category C1 covers vehicles over 3,500kg and up to 7,500kg MAM with a trailer up to 750kg. Check both plates together: a vehicle’s unladen weight or a job title does not establish the entitlement.

C1+E is distinct from Category C+E. It relates to the C1 vehicle-weight range, not every heavy-goods combination. The current GOV.UK category table is the starting point for matching the actual vehicle, trailer and intended load to a licence category.

Start with the licence you actually hold

Some full car-licence holders who passed before 1 January 1997 may have legacy trailer entitlement, subject to the categories and restriction codes currently shown on their licence. Do not rely on the original test date alone. View your driving-licence information on GOV.UK before buying a vehicle, accepting work or booking training.

Codes need reading in context. GOV.UK’s licence-code guidance says code 107 limits the relevant entitlement to a combined weight of no more than 8,250kg. Code 101 means “not for hire or reward”; it is not a universal C1 condition. The current licence record is the reliable place to see which category and code apply to an individual driver.

Match the course to the plated combination

An ambulance, horsebox or other familiar description does not automatically determine C1+E. Compare its plated weights and intended use with the licence record. Driver CPC is also a separate question: exemptions and requirements depend on the actual driving and use, so do not infer either from the vehicle type alone.
