HGV Owner Driver UK 2026: Complete Guide to Going Self-Employed

Becoming an owner-driver is a popular career goal for experienced HGV drivers who want greater independence and higher earnings. However, running your own haulage business involves significantly more than just driving — you need an operator's licence, the right insurance, a reliable vehicle, and a steady stream of work. This guide explains everything you need to know about becoming an HGV owner-driver in the UK in 2026.

Do You Need an Operator's Licence?

Yes. Any business using vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight for commercial purposes must hold an operator's licence. There are three types: a restricted licence (carry your own goods only), a standard national licence (carry goods for hire or reward within the UK), and a standard international licence (carry goods for hire or reward within the UK and internationally). Most owner-drivers who want to carry loads for other businesses will need a standard national or international licence.

Financial Requirements

To obtain a standard operator's licence, you must demonstrate sufficient financial resources: £8,000 for the first vehicle and £4,500 for each additional vehicle. You must evidence this through bank statements or a letter from your bank. See our guide on operator licence costs for a full breakdown.

Vehicle Requirements

Your vehicle must be roadworthy and maintained to the required standard, covered by a valid MOT, insured for commercial use, and fitted with a tachograph if required. You will also need to arrange a maintenance contract with a qualified workshop.

Insurance

As an owner-driver, you will need goods in transit insurance, public liability insurance, vehicle insurance, and breakdown cover. HGV insurance is significantly more expensive than car insurance — budget for £3,000–£8,000 per year depending on your vehicle, experience, and the type of work you do.

Finding Loads

Options include load boards (Haulage Exchange, Transport Exchange Group, Returnloads.net), direct contracts with haulage companies and manufacturers, agency work as a self-employed driver, and networking with other drivers and transport managers.

Running Costs

Cost ItemTypical Annual Cost
Vehicle finance/depreciation£15,000–£30,000
Fuel£30,000–£50,000
Insurance£3,000–£8,000
Maintenance and repairs£5,000–£15,000
Operator licence£401 application + £401 per 5-year renewal
Accountancy£500–£2,000

As a self-employed owner-driver, you must register with HMRC, complete a self-assessment tax return each year, and pay income tax and National Insurance on your profits. It is strongly recommended to use an accountant who specialises in road transport.
