ADR training is a specialist qualification required by drivers who transport dangerous goods by road. The term ADR comes from the French title of the international agreement: Accord européen relatif au transport international des marchandises Dangereuses par Route. This guide explains what ADR training involves, who needs it, what it costs, and how to get qualified in 2026.
What Is ADR?
ADR is an international agreement that sets out the rules for the safe transport of dangerous goods by road, covering packaging, labelling, documentation, and driver training. In the UK, ADR is implemented through the Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations 2009. ADR is updated every two years and applies throughout Europe and many other countries worldwide.
Who Needs ADR Training?
You need ADR training if you drive a vehicle carrying dangerous goods in quantities that exceed the ADR exemption thresholds. Dangerous goods include flammable liquids (Class 3), flammable gases (Class 2), toxic substances (Class 6.1), corrosive substances (Class 8), explosives (Class 1), radioactive materials (Class 7), and infectious substances (Class 6.2). Common industries requiring ADR-qualified drivers include fuel distribution, chemical transport, pharmaceutical logistics, and waste management.
ADR Certificate Structure
An ADR certificate consists of a core module plus one or more class-specific modules. The core module covers general ADR requirements: classification, packaging, labelling, documentation, and emergency procedures. Class-specific modules cover the rules for each category of dangerous goods. There is also a tanks module for drivers transporting dangerous goods in tanks.
ADR Training Duration and Cost
| Training Type | Duration | Typical Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Core module only | 2 days | £300–£500 |
| Core + 1 class module | 3–4 days | £450–£700 |
| Core + 2 class modules | 4–5 days | £600–£900 |
| Full ADR (all classes) | 7–10 days | £900–£1,500 |
The ADR Examination and Certificate Validity
At the end of each module, you must pass a written examination set by the DVSA with a pass mark of 70%. An ADR certificate is valid for 5 years. Before it expires, you must complete a refresher course and pass the examination again. See our guide on ADR renewal for full details.
