Change Your HGV Licence Address: DVLA Guide 2026

Change your HGV driving licence address with DVLA: online and postal steps, D741/D2 forms, CPC and tachograph checks, and separate vehicle-document updates.

If you need to know how to change the address on your HGV driver licence, start with the official DVLA address-change service. An address-only change is free for a full or provisional driving licence in Great Britain. Updating your driving licence is separate from updating vehicle documents, and it does not renew your HGV entitlement or Driver CPC.

Change Your Driving Licence Address Online: Step by Step

Open the official service. Read the GOV.UK guidance and check that the Great Britain process applies to you. Northern Ireland has a different process.
Choose online or postal. For an online change, have your driving licence available and check the service requirements. If you are also changing your name, GOV.UK says to apply by post.
Follow the current application instructions. Enter your new address and complete any identity checks within the official service. For a postal application, follow the D741 or D2 instructions below.
Keep the confirmation. After applying online, DVLA sends a confirmation email. Follow the instructions you receive about returning or dealing with your old licence rather than assuming the same sequence applies to every application.
Check the new record and separate documents. When the licence arrives, check your address and entitlements. Update the vehicle records that apply to you separately.

GOV.UK says you need your driving licence, must be resident in Great Britain and must not be banned from driving. It will tell you when signing in if identity evidence is required. Provide personal details only within the official service; GS does not need your licence number or identity documents to explain this process.

Change Your Address by Post: Photocard, D741 and D2

If you have a photocard driving licence, complete the changes section of letter D741 that came with it. Send the letter and photocard to the address given in the official postal instructions, with the correct postage.

If you do not have D741, use D2 for lorries and buses, available from most Post Offices. Do not assume the ordinary car-and-motorcycle D1 form is the right replacement for an HGV address-only application.

For a paper lorry or bus licence, GOV.UK lists a completed D2 form, your driving licence, original documents confirming identity and a passport photograph. If you are also changing your photo or name, check the specific instructions and any fee rather than treating it as an address-only change.

How Long Does DVLA Take, and Can You Still Drive?

Checked on 9 October 2026, GOV.UK says a licence should arrive within a week online or usually within three weeks by post. Postal applications can take longer if identity or medical details need checking. These are the published expectations, not a guaranteed appointment or delivery date; contact DVLA if a postal licence has not arrived within three weeks.

GOV.UK says you can still drive while waiting for an address-change licence. This does not extend an expired entitlement or CPC card, remove a disqualification or override medical restrictions. An address change and a vocational-licence renewal are different tasks.

Driver CPC Card: No Replacement Just for a New Address

Your Driver Qualification Card (DQC) does not have your address on it, so you do not need a new Driver CPC card solely because you moved. A future card is sent to the address on your driving licence; correct that record before the card is due. See the official Driver CPC card guidance.

Digital Tachograph Card: Check Whether an Address Is Printed

If your driver tachograph card has no address on it, GOV.UK says you only need to change the address on your driving licence. Do not apply for a replacement card just for that move.

Vehicle Log Book, Tax Direct Debit and Number Plate Documents

Changing your licence does not update all vehicle registration records. If you are the registered keeper, separately update the vehicle log book (V5C). If you pay vehicle tax by Direct Debit, update the vehicle tax Direct Debit too.

If you hold a personalised registration number on V750 or V778, check the personalised number plate documents guidance. If you have a registered trailer that you take abroad, check whether you need to update its trailer registration certificate. These tasks apply to the keeper or document holder, not automatically to every employed HGV driver.

Northern Ireland and Moving Abroad

The DVLA service described here covers England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland uses the separate DVA licence-update process linked from GOV.UK. If you move abroad, you cannot register the overseas address on a British licence; contact the driving-licence authority in your new country.

Do Not Leave Your Licence at an Old Address

GOV.UK states that failing to tell DVLA when your address changes can lead to a fine of up to £1,000. Update the record promptly so important licence and card correspondence reaches you. Address-Change Questions

Is an address-only change free?

An address-only change with DVLA is free. Changing your photo or other details at the same time can have separate requirements and fees.

Can I still drive while waiting?

GOV.UK says you can still drive while waiting for an address-change licence. This does not renew expired entitlement or Driver CPC, remove a disqualification or override medical restrictions.

Which postal form for HGV?

Use the changes section of D741 with a photocard licence. If D741 is missing, use D2 for lorries and buses. A paper lorry or bus licence also uses D2 and the identity and photo requirements in the official postal guide.

Need new Driver CPC or tachograph card?

A Driver CPC card has no address and does not need replacing just for a move. If your driver tachograph card has no address on it, update the licence address only; if it has an address, follow the DVLA postal card-change instructions.

Northern Ireland same process?

No. The DVLA address-change service is for Great Britain. Northern Ireland uses a separate DVA process linked from GOV.UK; moving abroad also requires guidance from the authority in the new country.
