The HGV theory test is the first major hurdle on the road to your LGV licence. Unlike the standard car theory test, the LGV theory test is significantly harder — it covers a wider range of topics, has a higher pass mark, and includes a separate CPC case studies test. What is the LGV Theory Test?
The LGV (Large Goods Vehicle) theory test is the written examination required before you can take your HGV practical driving test. It consists of two separate parts that are usually taken on the same day at a DVSA theory test centre:
- Part 1: Multiple choice test — 100 questions, 85 correct answers required to pass (85% pass mark)
- Part 2: Hazard perception test — 19 video clips, you must score at least 67 out of 100
You must pass both parts on the same day to receive a pass certificate. If you fail one part, you must retake the entire test.
The CPC Case Studies Test
In addition to the LGV theory test, you must also pass the Driver CPC Case Studies test (also known as the Module 2 test) before you can take your practical test. This is a separate examination that covers professional driving knowledge including drivers' hours, tachograph rules, load security, and health and safety.
The CPC case studies test consists of 7 case studies, each with multiple questions. You have 115 minutes to complete it and must score at least 40 out of 50 to pass. Most candidates book this on the same day as their LGV theory test to minimise travel.

The DVSA Official LGV Theory Test Kit is the most reliable study resource. It contains all the questions that can appear in the test, along with explanations for each answer. It is available as a book and as an app. Spend at least 2 to 4 weeks studying before your test date.
For hazard perception, practice with the DVSA hazard perception clips. The key difference from the car test is that LGV clips include more complex hazards such as loading bays, low bridges, and tight junctions. Click once when you first notice a developing hazard and again as it becomes more serious — but do not click repeatedly as this will score zero for that clip.
LGV Theory Test Costs and Booking
The LGV multiple choice and hazard perception test costs £26. The CPC case studies test costs £23. Both can be booked online at the DVSA website. You will need your provisional LGV licence number to book.
How Long Does the LGV Theory Pass Certificate Last?
Your LGV theory test pass certificate is valid for 2 years. You must pass your practical test within this period, otherwise you will need to retake the theory test. Book your practical training promptly after passing your theory test to avoid this.
