Driver CPC Grandfather Rights Explained

When Driver CPC was introduced in the UK, drivers who already held a professional driving licence were given "grandfather rights" — an automatic entitlement to the CPC without having to take the initial qualification tests. This guide explains who has grandfather rights, what they mean in practice, and what you still need to do to keep your CPC valid.

What Are Driver CPC Grandfather Rights?

Driver CPC grandfather rights (also called acquired rights) were granted to professional drivers who held a qualifying licence before the CPC was introduced. The key dates are:

  • HGV/LGV drivers: Grandfather rights apply to drivers who held a Category C or C+E licence before 10 September 2009
  • PCV/bus drivers: Grandfather rights apply to drivers who held a Category D licence before 10 September 2008

Drivers who qualified before these dates were automatically issued a Driver Qualification Card (DQC) without needing to pass the initial CPC modules.

What Do Grandfather Rights Mean in Practice?

Grandfather rights mean you did not need to pass the four CPC initial qualification modules (theory, case studies, practical driving test, and practical demonstration). However, grandfather rights do not exempt you from the periodic training requirement. You must still complete 35 hours of approved periodic CPC training every 5 years to keep your DQC valid.

What If My DQC Has Expired?

If your DQC has expired — whether you have grandfather rights or not — you must complete the outstanding periodic training hours before you can legally drive professionally again. You do not need to retake the initial qualification tests if you have grandfather rights, but you must bring your periodic training hours up to date.

Do Grandfather Rights Apply to New Licence Categories?

No. If you already have grandfather rights for Category C but want to add Category C+E (articulated lorries), you must complete the full initial CPC qualification for the new category. Grandfather rights only apply to the specific licence category you held before the relevant cut-off date.

How Do I Check My CPC Status?

You can check your CPC hours and DQC expiry date online at the DVSA's driver CPC service using your driving licence number. See our How to Check Your Driver CPC Hours guide for step-by-step instructions.
