What is a Category C+E licence?

Category C+E is the entitlement for a Category C vehicle towing a trailer over 750kg maximum authorised mass (MAM). It is often called Class 1 training or an artic licence, but the legal category and the plated weights of the actual combination are what matter. Category C itself covers goods vehicles over 3,500kg MAM with a trailer up to 750kg; C+E covers the same vehicle category with a trailer above that limit. Road, vehicle and loading limits still apply.

Check the current GOV.UK licence-category definitions against the vehicle and trailer you expect to drive. A training label, an artic job advert or the appearance of a vehicle is not a substitute for that check.

Choose the route from your starting entitlement

There is a Category C-to-C+E upgrade route for drivers who already hold full Category C. GS describes this as full Category C upgrade / Class 1 training. If Category C is the first entitlement you need for a rigid goods vehicle, compare the Category C / Class 2 course first.

There is also a direct C+E route from a full car licence: Fast Track C+E. The official process does not require a lower-category driving test to be passed first. You need a full car licence, the appropriate provisional entitlement and a test in the new category; GOV.UK says that applying for Category C provisional entitlement also gives C+E provisional entitlement. The medical, theory, provisional-entitlement and test stages still need to be completed as they apply to you.

Read GOV.UK’s higher-category guidance before choosing a course. It is particularly useful when comparing a full C upgrade with a direct C+E route: both lead to an entitlement goal, but they do not start from the same licence position.

Check the combination and the work

Licence entitlement is not every operating rule

Use the vehicle and trailer plates to establish MAM, then check your current categories and restriction codes. C+E is not a general permission to exceed a vehicle’s permitted weights, towing limits or other road rules. If the driving will be professional, assess Driver CPC separately; the applicable requirement depends on the work and any relevant exemption, not on the words “Class 1” alone.

Practical training with GS

GS practical HGV training is based at Dunsfold Airport near Cranleigh. Use the HGV training in Surrey page to compare the local routes, then contact GS Driver Training with your current licence and vehicle goal. The team can help identify whether the full C upgrade or direct C+E course is the relevant conversation; the final entitlement depends on the official application and test process.
