HGV Training from Ashford, Surrey: Licence Route Guide

A practical guide for Ashford, Surrey learners choosing C, C+E or C1 training and preparing for the HGV licence process.

If you live in Ashford, Surrey and are considering HGV training, start with the vehicle you need to drive rather than a course label. The right licence route depends on the vehicle’s maximum authorised mass (MAM), whether you will tow a trailer and whether driving will be your main job.

Choose the licence category first

Category C for rigid lorries

Category C permits vehicles over 3,500kg MAM with a trailer up to 750kg MAM. It is commonly called Class 2. If the work you are considering uses a rigid lorry, compare the current Category C course options with the vehicle requirement in the job description.

Category C+E for heavier trailers

Category C+E permits a Category C vehicle with a trailer over 750kg MAM. This is the entitlement often associated with articulated lorries, but the employer and vehicle specification should decide the route. GS lists both a Category C to C+E upgrade and a direct C+E route from a car licence; check the current entry requirements and course details before choosing.

C1 for medium-sized vehicles

Category C1 covers vehicles between 3,500kg and 7,500kg MAM with a trailer up to 750kg MAM. It may suit a role using a smaller goods vehicle, subject to the vehicle’s plated weight and the employer’s requirements. See the current C1 course information if that is the entitlement you need.

Check the official steps before booking practical training

For a first-time professional HGV driver, GOV.UK says you need a full car licence, must normally be at least 18 and must complete the relevant Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) process. The full CPC is required when driving an HGV is the main part of the job, unless an exemption applies. GOV.UK sets out the five-test route and the requirement for 35 hours of periodic training every five years after qualifying.

Apply for provisional entitlement and complete the medical

Before applying, check the entitlement you need. GOV.UK says the application uses a D2 form and a D4 medical examination report completed by a doctor; the application is sent with your photocard driving licence. Read the current provisional-entitlement guidance and wait until the entitlement is shown on your licence before making plans that depend on it.

Prepare for the tests that apply to your route

The GOV.UK HGV qualification guide explains which theory, case-study, off-road, on-road and practical demonstration tests form the full Driver CPC. For the on-road Part 3b test, GOV.UK requires you to have passed Part 1 theory and Part 3a off-road exercises first. It also explains the documents and correctly matched vehicle needed on test day. Build revision around the official requirements and the category you are taking, rather than assuming every course follows the same sequence.

Compare training information without guessing the inclusions

Once you know the entitlement, use the GS training-course overview to compare the relevant route. Course pages are the right place to check the current price, test inclusions and available options. If you need the professional qualification, distinguish initial Driver CPC from periodic training and review the current Driver CPC information for the option that applies to you.

Before you enquire, have your licence category, intended vehicle type, provisional-entitlement status and any employer requirement to hand. This makes it easier to ask focused questions about the training route rather than comparing unlike courses.

Plan travel to the GS training base

Ashford is a service area, not a GS training venue. GS Driver Training is based at Unit 508, Dunsfold Airport, Stovolds Hill, Cranleigh, Surrey GU6 8TB. Confirm the current course venue and your arrival instructions with GS before making travel arrangements from Ashford.

For visits to Dunsfold Airport, enter via Canada Avenue and use ///progress.vote.mistaking for the entrance. After entering, the published reference for Category C1, Category C, D1 and CPC Module 4 is ///yacht.with.prom; Category C+E and HGV experience visitors should use ///dine.knees.nurtures. Check your booking confirmation in case the instructions for your course differ.
