Changing career to become an HGV driver is one of the most financially rewarding moves available to people without a degree. With strong demand, good salaries, and relatively affordable training costs, HGV driving offers genuine career progression. But which licence should you get first? This guide helps career changers choose the right starting point.
The HGV Licence Categories
There are several HGV licence categories, each covering different vehicle types:
| Category | Vehicle Type | Typical Training Cost |
|---|---|---|
| C1 | Vehicles 3.5–7.5 tonnes (ambulances, Luton vans) | £800–£1,500 |
| C (Class 2) | Rigid lorries over 7.5 tonnes | £1,100–£2,400 |
| C+E (Class 1) | Articulated lorries (artic/HGV) | £2,600–£5,300 (via Class 2 first) |
| C1+E | 7.5-tonne vehicle with trailer over 750 kg | £800–£1,500 |
The Best Starting Point for Most Career Changers: Class 2 (Category C)
For most career changers, Category C (Class 2) is the best starting point. Here is why:
- It opens the door to a wide range of driving jobs immediately (supermarket distribution, construction, waste management, multi-drop delivery)
- It builds the fundamental skills needed to progress to Class 1
- Training costs are lower than going direct to Class 1
- Most employers prefer candidates who have built experience on Class 2 before moving to articulated vehicles
- Starting salaries are good (£28,000–£40,000) and provide a quick return on training investment
When to Consider Going Direct to Class 1
Direct access to Class 1 (C+E) is possible and may be worth considering if you have previous experience driving large vehicles (military, agricultural, or construction), if a specific employer will sponsor your training and requires Class 1 from day one, or if you are confident in your driving ability and want to maximise earning potential from the start.
The C1 Route: Lower Cost, Faster Entry
If you want to enter the industry quickly and at lower cost, a C1 licence (covering vehicles 3.5–7.5 tonnes) is the fastest and cheapest route. C1 opens doors to ambulance driving, Luton van work, and 7.5-tonne delivery roles. It is also a prerequisite for C1+E (7.5-tonne vehicle with trailer). However, C1 alone limits your earning potential compared to Class 2 or Class 1.
Funding Options for Career Changers
Several funding options are available for career changers:
- Skills Bootcamps: Government-funded training that can cover the full cost of HGV training for eligible candidates
- Employer sponsorship: Many haulage and logistics companies will sponsor your training in exchange for a minimum employment period
- DWP funding: Available for jobseekers through Jobcentre Plus
- Payment plans: GS Driver Training offers flexible payment plans to spread the cost
