ADR Licence Renewal: How to Renew Before Your Certificate Expires
An ADR certificate is valid for five years from the date of issue. When it expires, the holder can no longer legally transport dangerous goods by road until a new certificate is obtained. Unlike some professional qualifications, there is no grace period for ADR renewal — the certificate must be renewed before the expiry date to maintain continuous entitlement.
This guide explains the ADR renewal process in full, including when to start the renewal process, what the refresher course covers, how much renewal costs, and what happens if your certificate lapses.
When Does an ADR Certificate Expire?
Every ADR certificate carries a clear expiry date printed on the card. The certificate is valid for exactly five years from the date of issue. Drivers should note that the expiry date is based on the issue date, not the date training was completed — so if there is a delay between completing training and receiving the certificate, the effective validity period may be slightly shorter than five years.
JAUPT (the Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training, which administers ADR certification in the UK) does not send automatic renewal reminders. It is the driver's responsibility to track their expiry date and arrange renewal in good time.
How to Renew an ADR Certificate
ADR renewal follows the same structure as the initial certification process, but with a shorter refresher course rather than the full four-day initial training.
- Check your expiry date: Locate your current ADR certificate and note the expiry date. Aim to begin the renewal process at least 8–12 weeks before expiry to allow time for course booking, training, examination, and certificate issue.
- Book a refresher course: Contact an approved ADR training provider and book a refresher course. The refresher course covers updates to ADR regulations, any changes to dangerous goods classifications, and a review of core topics. It typically takes 2–3 days, compared to 4 days for the initial course.
- Complete the refresher training: Attend and complete the refresher course. Providers will cover any regulatory changes since your last certification and ensure you are up to date with current requirements.
- Pass the DVSA written examination: The renewal process includes the same DVSA written examination as the initial certification. You must pass the examination to obtain a new certificate. The examination covers the same topics as the initial exam, with questions updated to reflect any regulatory changes.
- Receive your new certificate: Once you have passed the examination, JAUPT will issue a new ADR certificate valid for a further five years. The new certificate will be sent to you by post, typically within 2–4 weeks of the examination date.
ADR Renewal Cost
ADR renewal is less expensive than the initial certification because the refresher course is shorter. Typical renewal costs in the UK for 2025 are as follows.
| Renewal Component | Duration | Typical Cost (2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Core ADR refresher course | 2–3 days | £250 – £450 |
| Tanks module (AT) refresher | 0.5–1 additional day | £80 – £150 |
| DVSA written examination | Included in course | ~£60 (usually included) |
| Examination resit (if required) | N/A | ~£60 per paper |
What Happens If Your ADR Certificate Lapses?
If your ADR certificate expires before you complete the renewal process, you lose your entitlement to transport dangerous goods by road. There is no grace period under the ADR regulations — an expired certificate is not valid, even by one day.
If your certificate has lapsed, you must complete the full renewal process (refresher course and examination) to obtain a new certificate. You cannot transport dangerous goods in the meantime. Employers are legally required to ensure that drivers transporting dangerous goods hold a valid ADR certificate, and DVSA enforcement officers check certificates during roadside inspections.
In practice, a lapsed certificate does not require you to repeat the full four-day initial course. The refresher course is still the appropriate route for renewal, even if the certificate has already expired. However, if your certificate has been expired for a significant period (typically more than 12 months), some training providers may recommend completing the full initial course to ensure your knowledge is fully up to date.
Renewing Multiple ADR Modules
If you hold the core ADR certificate plus one or more specialist modules (such as the tanks module AT), all modules must be renewed at the same time. You cannot renew the core certificate and leave specialist modules to expire separately. The renewal refresher course will cover all modules you currently hold, and the new certificate will reflect the same entitlements as your current one.
ADR Renewal for Drivers Changing Employer
The ADR certificate belongs to the individual driver, not the employer. If you change jobs, your ADR certificate remains valid and transfers with you. You do not need to repeat training when changing employer, provided your certificate has not expired. Your new employer may ask to see your certificate as part of their compliance checks.
