7.5-Tonne Truck Licence Age Requirements UK: Minimum Age and Medical Rules Explained

7.5-Tonne Truck Licence Age Requirements UK: What You Need to Know in 2026

Understanding the age requirements for driving a 7.5-tonne truck in the UK is essential for anyone planning a career in logistics or considering an upgrade from a standard car licence. The rules differ depending on whether you hold the C1 entitlement automatically (as most drivers licenced before 1 January 1997 do) or whether you need to apply for it separately, and whether you intend to drive commercially or privately.

The Minimum Age for a C1 Licence

The minimum age to obtain a Category C1 licence in the UK is 18 years old. This applies to both the provisional C1 entitlement and the full C1 licence obtained after passing the theory and practical tests. There is no upper age limit for holding a C1 licence, but drivers aged 45 and over must renew their licence every five years and undergo a medical examination at each renewal.

Automatic C1 Entitlement for Pre-1997 Licence Holders

If you passed your car driving test before 1 January 1997, you almost certainly have automatic C1 entitlement on your licence. This means you can drive vehicles up to 7,500 kg GVW without taking any additional tests, provided you are driving for private purposes. To drive commercially (carrying goods for hire or reward or as part of employment), you also need a valid Driver CPC/DQC.

This automatic entitlement was granted when the EU driving licence categories were introduced in 1997 and is sometimes called "grandfather rights" for C1. It does not expire, but it is subject to the standard medical renewal requirements for professional driving categories.

Applying for C1 Entitlement After 1997

Drivers who passed their car test on or after 1 January 1997 do not automatically have C1 entitlement. To obtain it, you must:

  1. Be at least 18 years old
  2. Hold a valid full car (Category B) licence
  3. Pass a D4 medical examination with a DVLA-approved doctor
  4. Apply for provisional C1 entitlement from the DVLA (using form D2 and the D4 medical report)
  5. Pass the Category C1 theory test (multiple choice and hazard perception)
  6. Pass the Driver CPC theory tests (Case Studies and Theory Test Part 1a) if driving commercially
  7. Pass the Category C1 practical driving test (Module 3)
  8. Pass the Driver CPC practical test (Module 4) if driving commercially

Age Requirements for Commercial C1 Driving

To drive a 7.5-tonne vehicle commercially in the UK, you must be at least 18 years old and hold both a valid C1 licence and a valid Driver CPC/DQC. There is no minimum age above 18 for commercial C1 driving, unlike Class 1 (C+E) driving where the minimum age is 21 in most circumstances (18 for drivers undergoing CPC initial qualification under the Junior Driver scheme).

Medical Requirements by Age

Age Group Medical Renewal Requirement Licence Renewal Period
18–44 D4 medical at initial application only Licence valid until age 45
45–64 D4 medical at each renewal Every 5 years
65+ D4 medical at each renewal Every 1 year

The D4 medical checks vision (including peripheral vision and colour blindness), cardiovascular health, neurological conditions, diabetes management, and any other conditions that could affect safe driving. The cost is typically £50–£120 and is not covered by the NHS.

C1 vs C1+E: Age Requirements for Towing

A standard C1 licence allows you to tow a trailer up to 750 kg. If you need to tow a heavier trailer with a 7.5-tonne vehicle (for example, a horsebox or equipment trailer), you need the C1+E entitlement. The minimum age for C1+E is also 18, and you must pass an additional practical test (Module 3 for C1+E) after obtaining your C1 licence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a 17-year-old drive a 7.5-tonne truck?

No. The minimum age for a C1 licence in the UK is 18. A 17-year-old can hold a provisional car licence but cannot apply for provisional C1 entitlement until they turn 18.

Can I drive a 7.5-tonne truck on my car licence?

Only if your car licence was issued before 1 January 1997 and includes automatic C1 entitlement. Drivers licenced after that date need a separate C1 qualification. Check your photocard licence — C1 will appear in the entitlements section if you have it.

Is there an upper age limit for 7.5-tonne driving?

There is no upper age limit, but drivers aged 65 and over must renew their licence annually and pass a D4 medical at each renewal. Provided you remain medically fit, you can continue driving 7.5-tonne vehicles indefinitely.
