D1+E driver training is required by anyone who drives a minibus and needs to tow a trailer with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) exceeding 750 kg. The range of organisations and individuals who need D1+E is broader than many people realise — from schools and sports clubs to charities, outdoor activity centres, and event transport providers.
Schools and Academies
Schools that use minibuses for sports fixtures, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, music tours, and residential trips often need to tow trailers carrying sports equipment, luggage, musical instruments, or camping gear. When the trailer exceeds 750 kg MAM, the driver must hold D1+E. Many school business managers and PE staff are surprised to discover their D1 entitlement does not cover the heavier trailers they routinely tow.
Colleges and Universities
Further and higher education institutions face the same challenge. Student sports teams, outdoor education departments, and field trip coordinators who drive minibuses with equipment trailers need D1+E if the trailer exceeds the 750 kg threshold.
Sports Clubs
Rugby clubs, football clubs, rowing clubs, cricket clubs, athletics clubs, and touring teams frequently tow equipment trailers alongside their minibuses. Rowing clubs in particular often tow boat trailers that significantly exceed 750 kg. Without D1+E, the club's minibus driver is not legally permitted to tow those trailers.
Charities and Community Transport Groups
Charities that transport passengers alongside wheelchairs, mobility equipment, food supplies, or community resources may need D1+E when their trailer exceeds 750 kg. Community transport operators who serve elderly or disabled passengers often use wheelchair trailers that require the full D1+E entitlement.
Churches and Faith Organisations
Churches and faith groups that use minibuses for pilgrimages, retreats, and community events sometimes tow trailers carrying sound equipment, catering supplies, or camping gear. If the trailer exceeds 750 kg MAM, D1+E is required.
Scouts, Guides, and Youth Groups
Youth organisations that run outdoor activities, camps, and expeditions regularly tow equipment trailers. Scout groups towing camping trailers, canoe trailers, or activity equipment trailers over 750 kg need drivers with D1+E entitlement.
Outdoor Activity Centres
Outdoor education and activity centres that transport participants in minibuses while towing kayaks, climbing gear, or camping equipment need D1+E when the trailer weight exceeds 750 kg.
Airport Transfer and Event Transport Operators
Private hire minibus operators who tow luggage trailers for airport transfers, and event transport providers who tow equipment trailers alongside passenger minibuses, need D1+E when the trailer exceeds 750 kg.
