Getting a D1+E licence in the UK involves a clear sequence of steps. This guide explains each stage from checking your eligibility through to receiving your updated photocard licence from the DVLA.
Step 1: Check Your Current Licence Entitlements
Log in to the DVLA's View Driving Licence service at gov.uk to see your current entitlements. You need D1 entitlement before you can add D1+E. If you do not yet have D1, you must obtain it first — either through a D1 practical test or, if you passed your car test before 1 January 1997, by checking whether D1 (not for hire or reward) was automatically granted.
Step 2: Complete a D4 Medical Examination
To apply for D1 or D1+E entitlement, you must pass a D4 medical examination conducted by a DVLA-registered doctor. The medical assesses your eyesight, blood pressure, cardiovascular health, and general fitness to drive. The completed D4 form must be submitted with your licence application. The medical is valid for four months from the date of examination.
Step 3: Apply for a Provisional D1+E Entitlement
If you already hold D1 on your full licence, you may be able to proceed directly to training. If you need to add the provisional D1+E entitlement, complete form D2 (application for a provisional licence) and submit it to the DVLA along with your D4 medical form and the appropriate fee. Processing typically takes two to three weeks.
Step 4: Complete D1+E Practical Training
Book your D1+E training with a DVSA-approved training provider such as GS Driver Training. Training covers:
- Trailer coupling and uncoupling procedures
- Pre-drive safety checks on the trailer
- Reversing with a trailer using mirrors
- Road driving with a trailer — junctions, roundabouts, lane discipline, speed management
- Passenger safety considerations when towing
- DVSA test preparation and mock tests
Step 5: Book and Pass the D1+E Practical Test
Book your D1+E practical test through the DVSA booking service at gov.uk. The test is conducted at a DVSA test centre and lasts approximately 90 minutes. It includes an eyesight check, a vehicle safety check ("show me, tell me"), a road drive, and a reversing exercise. You must demonstrate safe and controlled handling of the minibus-and-trailer combination throughout.
Step 6: Receive Your Updated Licence
Once you pass the D1+E practical test, the DVSA notifies the DVLA, which updates your licence to include D1+E entitlement. Your updated photocard licence is typically issued within one to two weeks.
How Long Does the Process Take?
From starting the process to receiving your updated licence, most candidates complete D1+E in four to eight weeks, depending on DVLA processing times and test availability. GS Driver Training can advise on current test waiting times in the Surrey area.
