Can I Tow a Trailer with a D1 Minibus Licence?

Can I Tow a Trailer with a D1 Minibus Licence?

Yes — but only up to a point. A D1 minibus licence allows you to tow a trailer with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of up to 750 kg. If the trailer you need to tow has a MAM exceeding 750 kg, you require D1+E entitlement. Driving a minibus with a heavier trailer on a D1-only licence is a legal offence.

What Is MAM?

Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) — also called Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) — is the maximum weight a vehicle or trailer is designed to carry, including its own weight plus any load. The MAM is shown on the trailer's identification plate. It is the MAM, not the actual loaded weight, that determines which licence category is required.

The 750 kg Rule Explained

Under UK driving licence law, a D1 entitlement permits the driver to tow a trailer with a MAM not exceeding 750 kg. This covers many light trailers — small luggage trailers, bike racks, and lightweight equipment trailers. However, wheelchair trailers, boat trailers, large equipment trailers, and specialist trailers frequently exceed 750 kg MAM, triggering the D1+E requirement.

How to Check Whether You Need D1+E

Check the trailer's identification plate, which is usually mounted on the front nearside of the trailer. The plate will show the MAM. If the MAM exceeds 750 kg, you need D1+E. If you cannot locate the plate, contact the trailer manufacturer or supplier for the specification.

What Happens If You Tow Without D1+E?

Towing a trailer over 750 kg MAM with a minibus on a D1-only licence is a criminal offence under the Road Traffic Act 1988. The driver may be prosecuted for driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, which carries a fine and penalty points. The vehicle may be prohibited from moving. Insurance covering the journey is likely to be invalidated, leaving the driver and organisation exposed to significant liability.

Pre-1997 Licence Holders

Drivers who passed their car test before 1 January 1997 may have D1 (not for hire or reward) automatically on their licence. This entitlement does not automatically include D1+E. Pre-1997 licence holders who wish to tow a trailer over 750 kg with a minibus must still obtain D1+E entitlement through training and a practical test.
