D1 vs D1+E Licence: What Is the Difference?

D1 and D1+E are both minibus licence categories in the UK, but they cover different combinations of vehicle and trailer. Understanding the difference is essential for anyone who drives a minibus and needs to tow equipment, luggage, or specialist trailers.

D1: Minibus Only

Category D1 covers minibuses designed to carry between 9 and 16 passengers, with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) not exceeding 8 tonnes. D1 allows the driver to tow a trailer with a MAM of up to 750 kg. This covers light trailers such as small luggage trailers, bike racks on tow bars, and lightweight equipment trailers.

D1+E: Minibus with Heavier Trailer

Category D1+E adds the trailer entitlement to D1. It allows the driver to tow a trailer with a MAM exceeding 750 kg, provided the combined MAM of the minibus and trailer does not exceed the maximum train weight on the licence. D1+E is required for towing wheelchair trailers, equipment trailers, boat trailers, and other heavier loads.

When Do You Need D1+E Instead of D1?

You need D1+E rather than D1 whenever the trailer you intend to tow has a MAM exceeding 750 kg. Common situations include:

  • A school towing a sports equipment trailer to away fixtures
  • A charity towing a wheelchair or mobility trailer
  • A sports club towing a boat, canoe, or rowing equipment trailer
  • An outdoor activity centre towing a camping or gear trailer
  • A community transport group towing a food bank or supply trailer

Can I Drive D1+E on a D1 Licence?

No. Driving a minibus with a trailer over 750 kg MAM without D1+E entitlement is a legal offence. The driver may face prosecution, the vehicle may be prohibited, and any insurance covering the journey may be invalidated. Always check your licence entitlements before towing.
