How Long Does D1+E Driver Training Take?

The time required to complete D1+E driver training varies from candidate to candidate. The main factors are your existing minibus experience, your towing and reversing ability, your confidence with a trailer, and the availability of DVSA test slots in your area. This guide explains what to expect at each stage.

Training Duration

Most candidates who already hold D1 entitlement and have some driving experience with a minibus complete D1+E training in one to three days. The training focuses on the additional skills required for the trailer — coupling and uncoupling, reversing, and road driving with a trailer. Candidates who have never towed a trailer before typically need more time to develop confidence and control.

Factors That Affect Training Length

  • Existing towing experience: Candidates who have towed trailers with a car or van adapt more quickly to towing with a minibus.
  • Reversing ability: Reversing with a trailer is the skill that takes the most practice. Candidates who struggle with reversing may need additional sessions.
  • Minibus experience: Candidates who are confident and experienced D1 drivers progress faster than those who are less experienced with minibuses.
  • Observation and road positioning: The D1+E test assesses the same observation and road positioning skills as the D1 test, but with the added complexity of a trailer. Candidates who are already strong on these skills progress faster.
  • Test availability: DVSA test slots vary by location and time of year. In busy periods, waiting times for a test slot can add two to four weeks to the overall timeline.

Typical Timeline

From starting training to receiving your updated D1+E licence, most candidates complete the process in four to eight weeks. This includes training, the DVSA practical test, and DVLA processing of the updated licence. Candidates in areas with shorter test waiting times may complete the process more quickly.
