The length of C1+E driver training varies considerably from candidate to candidate. Unlike a fixed-duration course, the number of training days you need depends on your existing skills, experience, and how quickly you develop the specific techniques required for the DVSA practical test. This guide explains what affects training duration and what you can realistically expect.
Typical Training Duration
Most candidates who already hold a Category C1 licence require between two and five days of C1+E training before they are ready to sit the practical test. Candidates who need to obtain C1 first should allow an additional three to five days for the C1 element.
Factors That Affect Training Duration
1. Reversing Ability
Trailer reversing is the most technically demanding element of the C1+E test and the factor that most affects training duration. Candidates with no previous experience of reversing with a trailer typically need more time to develop the counter-steering instincts required. Those who have reversed trailers before — even on a car licence — usually progress more quickly.
2. Previous Towing Experience
Candidates who have towed trailers on a car licence or in a professional capacity will have a head start on understanding how a trailer behaves on the road — particularly when braking, cornering, and changing lanes. This experience shortens the road-driving element of training.
3. Vehicle Familiarity
Drivers who are already comfortable operating large vehicles (ambulances, 7.5-tonne trucks, motorhomes) will spend less time adapting to the size and feel of the training vehicle and more time developing trailer-specific skills.
4. Observation and Mirror Use
Effective use of mirrors is critical when towing a trailer. Candidates who develop good mirror habits quickly will progress faster through the road-driving element of training.
5. Test Availability
Once training is complete, DVSA test waiting times vary by test centre and time of year. In busy periods, waiting times of two to four weeks are common. Your instructor will advise on the best time to book your test relative to your training progress.
Can You Complete C1+E Training in a Week?
Yes — many candidates complete their C1+E training and test within a single week, particularly if they already hold C1 and have some towing experience. An intensive programme of three to four days' training followed by a test booking at the end of the week is a common and effective approach.
What Happens If You Need More Time?
There is no penalty for needing additional training days. Your instructor will assess your progress honestly and recommend additional training if needed before booking your test. It is always better to spend an extra day training than to sit the test before you are ready.
