Many horsebox owners are surprised to discover that their existing driving licence does not cover the vehicle and trailer combination they are already using. If your horsebox lorry falls in the 7.5-tonne category and you tow a tack trailer, living trailer, or any other trailer with a MAM exceeding 750 kg, you need a C1+E licence. This guide explains everything horsebox owners need to know.
Why Horsebox Owners Often Need C1+E
Large horsebox lorries — particularly those built on Mercedes Atego, MAN TGL, or similar chassis — typically have a MAM of between 5,000 kg and 7,500 kg, placing them firmly in the Category C1 weight range. Many owners also tow a trailer behind the horsebox to carry additional tack, a living van, or a second horse trailer. If that trailer's MAM exceeds 750 kg, a C1+E licence is legally required.
Driving without the correct entitlement is a criminal offence. It also invalidates your vehicle insurance, which could leave you personally liable for any accident costs.
What the C1+E Test Involves for Horsebox Drivers
The DVSA C1+E practical test is conducted in a C1 vehicle (your horsebox or a training vehicle) with a qualifying trailer attached. The test includes:
- Reversing exercise: Usually an offset reverse or parallel park with the trailer. This is the element most candidates find most challenging.
- Road drive: Approximately 40 minutes of road driving, including dual carriageways, roundabouts, junctions, and rural roads.
- Independent driving: Following signs or a sat-nav for part of the route without examiner direction.
- Coupling and uncoupling: The examiner may ask you to demonstrate safe coupling and uncoupling of the trailer.
Training for Horsebox Owners at GS Driver Training
Our C1+E training programme is tailored to your existing experience. If you are already comfortable driving your horsebox on the road but need to develop trailer reversing skills and test technique, we will focus your training time on those areas. If you are new to the vehicle class entirely, we will build your confidence from the ground up.
Training covers:
- Trailer coupling and uncoupling procedures.
- Mirror use and observation with a trailer attached.
- Reversing exercises — the most technically demanding part of the test.
- Road driving with the outfit: speed management, lane discipline, and planning ahead.
- DVSA test procedures and examiner expectations.
Do You Need C1 First?
Yes. C1+E requires you to already hold (or obtain simultaneously) a Category C1 licence. If you do not currently have C1 on your licence, you will need to train and test for C1 before or alongside your C1+E training. GS Driver Training can arrange combined C1 and C1+E training programmes.
How Long Will Training Take?
Most horsebox owners who already have road experience in a large vehicle need between two and four days of C1+E training to reach test standard, with the majority of time spent on reversing exercises. Candidates with little or no experience of large vehicles may need additional time for the C1 element.
