The C1+E licence is a specialist entitlement that many drivers do not realise they need until they are already operating a vehicle and trailer combination that exceeds the legal limit for a standard C1 licence. This guide identifies the roles and situations where C1+E training is required and explains why obtaining the correct entitlement matters.
The Legal Threshold
A standard Category C1 licence permits towing a trailer with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of up to 750 kg. The moment your trailer's MAM exceeds 750 kg — regardless of what it actually weighs on the day — you require a C1+E entitlement. Driving without the correct licence category is a criminal offence that can result in prosecution, points, fines, and invalidated insurance.
Who Needs C1+E?
Horsebox Owners and Equestrian Professionals
Many horsebox lorries fall in the 7.5-tonne C1 weight range. Owners who also tow a tack trailer, living trailer, or additional equipment trailer behind their horsebox need C1+E. Even if the trailer is not heavily loaded, it is the MAM (the maximum the trailer is designed to carry) that determines the licence requirement — not the actual weight on the day.
Motorhome Owners
Large motorhomes — particularly A-class and coach-built models — can fall in the C1 weight range. Owners who want to tow a car (on an A-frame or trailer), a bike trailer, or a box trailer behind such a motorhome need C1+E if the trailer's MAM exceeds 750 kg.
Recovery Drivers
Recovery operators using a 7.5-tonne recovery truck often need to tow a trailer to carry additional recovered vehicles, equipment, or specialist recovery gear. If the trailer's MAM exceeds 750 kg, C1+E is required.
Event Medical Teams and Private Ambulance Operators
Event medical teams and private ambulance companies sometimes tow equipment trailers — containing defibrillators, stretchers, or specialist medical equipment — behind their C1-class ambulance vehicles. If the trailer's MAM exceeds 750 kg, C1+E is needed.
Race Teams and Motorsport Support Crews
Race teams using 7.5-tonne support vehicles to transport equipment, generators, or spare parts on trailers frequently need C1+E. The same applies to expedition and overland support vehicle drivers who tow supply trailers.
Utility and Maintenance Teams
Utility companies, telecoms contractors, and maintenance teams operating 7.5-tonne service vehicles with plant trailers, cable drum trailers, or tool trailers will need C1+E if the trailer's MAM exceeds 750 kg.
Specialist Couriers and Logistics Operators
Some specialist courier operations use 7.5-tonne vehicles with drawbar trailers for additional load capacity. If the trailer's MAM exceeds 750 kg, C1+E is required.
How to Check Whether You Need C1+E
To determine whether you need C1+E, check two things:
- The MAM of your towing vehicle — if it is between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg, you need at least C1.
- The MAM of your trailer — if it exceeds 750 kg, you need C1+E in addition to C1.
The MAM of both the vehicle and the trailer is printed on the vehicle identification plate (VIN plate) or in the vehicle's registration documents (V5C).
