How to Get a C1+E Licence: Step-by-Step Guide

Obtaining a C1+E licence requires working through a clear sequence of steps. This guide explains the full process from checking your existing entitlements to passing the DVSA practical test and receiving your updated licence.

Step 1: Check Your Current Licence Entitlements

Before beginning any training, check the back of your photocard driving licence. If you already have Category C1 printed there, you can proceed directly to C1+E training. If you do not have C1, you must obtain it first before you can train for C1+E.

Drivers who passed their car test before 1 January 1997 may have C1 as a grandfather right — check your licence carefully. Note that grandfather C1 does not include C1+E; you still need to train and test for the trailer entitlement.

Step 2: Obtain a Provisional C1+E Entitlement

If you already hold a full C1 licence, you can apply to add a provisional C1+E entitlement to your licence by completing a D2 application form (available from the Post Office or DVLA). There is no separate theory test required for C1+E if you already hold C1.

If you do not yet hold C1, you must first pass the Category C1 theory test (multiple choice and hazard perception) and the C1 practical test before applying for C1+E.

Step 3: Complete a D4 Medical Examination (if Required)

If you are applying for C1 for the first time, or if your existing C1 entitlement requires renewal due to age (drivers aged 45 and over must renew every five years), you will need to pass a Group 2 D4 medical examination conducted by a DVLA-registered doctor. The D4 medical assesses eyesight, blood pressure, cardiovascular health, and other fitness criteria.

Step 4: Book C1+E Practical Training

Once your provisional C1+E entitlement is in place, book your practical training with a DVSA-approved training provider such as GS Driver Training. Training covers:

  • Coupling and uncoupling the trailer safely.
  • Reversing with a trailer — the most technically demanding element of the test.
  • Road driving with the outfit: lane positioning, mirror use, speed management, and planning.
  • Safe loading awareness and trailer stability.
  • DVSA test procedures and examiner expectations.

Step 5: Book and Pass the DVSA C1+E Practical Test

Book your practical test through the DVSA online booking system. The C1+E test is conducted in a C1 vehicle with a qualifying trailer and includes:

  • A reversing exercise (usually an offset reverse or parallel park with the trailer).
  • Coupling and uncoupling demonstration (at the examiner's discretion).
  • An independent driving section.
  • A road drive of approximately 40 minutes.

You may accumulate up to 15 minor (driver) faults. A single serious or dangerous fault results in a fail.

Step 6: Receive Your Updated Licence

After passing, the DVSA will notify the DVLA and your licence will be updated to show the C1E entitlement. You are then legally entitled to drive C1+E combinations on UK roads.

How Long Does the Process Take?

If you already hold C1, the C1+E training and test process typically takes between two and five days of training depending on your experience with trailers, followed by a test booking (usually one to three weeks' wait). If you need to obtain C1 first, allow additional time for theory preparation and the C1 practical test.
