The difference between a C1 licence and a C1+E licence is one of the most common questions we receive from drivers who need to tow a trailer behind a 7.5-tonne vehicle. The short answer is that C1 covers the vehicle and a light trailer; C1+E unlocks heavier trailer towing. This guide explains exactly where the line falls and what each licence allows you to do.
What Is a C1 Licence?
Category C1 allows you to drive a vehicle with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg. This covers large vans, 7.5-tonne trucks, ambulances, and similar vehicles. A C1 licence also permits you to tow a trailer — but only one with a MAM of 750 kg or less.
What Is a C1+E Licence?
Category C1+E adds a trailer entitlement on top of C1. It allows you to tow a trailer with a MAM greater than 750 kg behind a C1 vehicle, provided the combined MAM of the vehicle and trailer does not exceed 12,000 kg. If the combined weight would exceed 12,000 kg, you would need a full Category C+E (Class 1 artic) licence.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Feature | C1 | C1+E |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle MAM | 3,500–7,500 kg | 3,500–7,500 kg |
| Trailer MAM permitted | Up to 750 kg | Over 750 kg |
| Combined MAM limit | 8,250 kg | 12,000 kg |
| Separate practical test | Yes | Yes |
| Theory test required | Yes (if not already held) | No (if C1 already held) |
| Typical use | Ambulances, 7.5t trucks, large vans | Horsebox combos, recovery, event medical |
When Do You Need C1+E Instead of C1?
You need C1+E whenever you want to tow a trailer heavier than 750 kg MAM behind a C1 vehicle. Common scenarios include:
- A horsebox owner who tows a tack trailer or living van behind their 7.5-tonne horsebox lorry.
- A motorhome owner whose motorhome falls in the C1 weight range and who wants to tow a car or bike trailer.
- A recovery driver using a 7.5-tonne recovery truck with a trailer for additional recovered vehicles.
- An event medical team towing an equipment trailer behind an ambulance vehicle.
Can You Drive C1+E Vehicles on a Standard Car Licence?
No. A standard Category B (car) licence only permits vehicles up to 3,500 kg MAM and trailers up to 750 kg MAM (with a combined limit of 3,500 kg). To drive a C1 vehicle or tow a heavier trailer, you must hold the appropriate C1 or C1+E entitlement.
Do You Need to Pass a Separate Test for C1+E?
Yes. Even if you already hold a full C1 licence, you must pass a separate DVSA practical driving test in a C1 vehicle with a qualifying trailer to obtain the C1+E entitlement. There is no additional theory test required if you already hold C1, but you must demonstrate competent trailer handling, reversing, coupling and uncoupling, and safe road driving with the outfit.
