The D1+E practical driving test is conducted by a DVSA examiner and assesses your ability to drive a minibus safely while towing a trailer. This guide explains what happens on the day, what the examiner is looking for, and how to prepare.
Before the Test
Arrive at the test centre at least 15 minutes before your appointment. Bring your photocard driving licence and the letter confirming your test booking. The examiner will check your identity and licence before the test begins.
Eyesight Check
The test begins with an eyesight check. You must be able to read a standard number plate from 20 metres in good daylight. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you must wear them throughout the test.
Vehicle Safety Check ("Show Me, Tell Me")
The examiner will ask one "tell me" question (answered verbally before driving) and one "show me" question (demonstrated while driving). Questions cover topics such as how to check tyre condition, how to check brake fluid level, how to use the horn, and how to operate the rear demister. Practise these questions with your instructor before the test.
Road Drive
The road drive lasts approximately 60 to 70 minutes and covers a variety of road types — town roads, rural roads, and dual carriageways where available. The examiner assesses your:
- Mirror use — checking mirrors before signalling, changing speed, and changing direction
- Observation at junctions — effective observation before emerging, giving way correctly
- Lane discipline — correct lane selection on roundabouts and multi-lane roads
- Speed management — appropriate speed for the road type and conditions
- Trailer awareness — allowing extra space for the trailer when turning, changing lanes, and stopping
- Passenger safety awareness — smooth acceleration, braking, and cornering
Reversing Exercise
The reversing exercise requires you to reverse the minibus-and-trailer combination into a marked bay or along a prescribed route. The examiner assesses your control, accuracy, and use of mirrors. This is the exercise that most candidates find most challenging — practise it thoroughly with your instructor before the test.
Uncoupling and Recoupling (if applicable)
Some D1+E tests include an uncoupling and recoupling exercise. The examiner will ask you to uncouple the trailer, move the minibus forward, then reverse back and recouple the trailer. Practise this procedure until it is smooth and methodical.
After the Test
The examiner will tell you whether you have passed or failed at the end of the test. If you pass, you will receive a pass certificate. If you fail, the examiner will explain the faults and you can rebook the test. GS Driver Training will debrief you after the test and advise on any areas to address before a retest.
