Older drivers — particularly those who passed their car driving test before 1 January 1997 — often have questions about their C1+E entitlement, grandfather rights, medical renewal requirements, and towing limits. This guide addresses the most common questions from drivers aged 45 and over who want to obtain or renew a C1+E licence.
Do I Already Have C1 Entitlement?
If you passed your car driving test before 1 January 1997, you may have Category C1 entitlement on your licence as a grandfather right. Check the back of your photocard licence — if "C1" appears in the categories section, you have C1 entitlement. If you have a paper licence (pre-photocard), you may need to exchange it for a photocard to confirm your entitlements.
Important: even if you have grandfather C1 entitlement, this does not include C1+E. The trailer entitlement must be obtained separately through training and a practical test.
Medical Requirements for Older Drivers
C1 and C1+E licences are Group 2 licences, which carry stricter medical requirements than a standard car licence. The key medical renewal milestones are:
- Age 45: C1/C1+E entitlement must be renewed every five years (instead of the standard ten-year renewal for car licences).
- Age 65: Renewal is required annually.
Each renewal requires a Group 2 D4 medical examination conducted by a DVLA-registered doctor. The D4 medical assesses eyesight, blood pressure, cardiovascular health, diabetes management, and other fitness criteria relevant to driving larger vehicles.
What If My C1 Entitlement Has Lapsed?
If your C1 entitlement has lapsed due to a missed medical renewal, you will need to pass a new D4 medical and may need to retrain and retest for C1 before you can obtain C1+E. Contact the DVLA for guidance on your specific situation.
Towing Limits and Restrictions
Some older drivers who have grandfather C1 entitlement may have restrictions on their licence — for example, a restriction limiting them to vehicles of a specific weight or type. Check your licence carefully for any codes or restrictions and contact the DVLA if you are unsure what they mean.
C1+E Training for Older Drivers
There is no upper age limit for obtaining a C1+E licence, provided you meet the medical requirements. Many of our candidates at GS Driver Training are experienced older drivers who have driven large vehicles for years and simply need to add the trailer entitlement. Our instructors are patient and experienced in working with candidates of all ages and backgrounds.
If you are an older driver returning to large vehicle driving after a break, we will assess your current skills at the start of training and build a programme around your needs. View our C1+E course details or call 01252 447808 to discuss your situation.
