The Complete Cost of HGV Training in the UK (2026 Guide)

Understanding the full cost of HGV training is one of the most important steps before committing to a new career in transport. The total investment depends on which licence category you are pursuing, your existing qualifications, and the training provider you choose. This guide breaks down every cost you will encounter on the journey from car licence to fully qualified HGV driver.

What Does HGV Training Actually Cost?

The total cost of becoming a qualified HGV driver in the UK typically ranges from £1,500 to £3,500, depending on the licence category and whether you need additional qualifications like the Driver CPC. Here is a detailed breakdown of each component:

1. HGV Medical Examination (D4 Form)

Before you can apply for a provisional HGV licence, you must pass a medical examination conducted by a registered doctor. This involves checks on your vision, blood pressure, general health, and any conditions that could affect your ability to drive safely.

  • Cost: £50 – £120 (varies by GP surgery or occupational health provider)
  • Validity: Until age 45, then every 5 years until 65, then annually

At GS Driver Training, we can help you arrange your medical through our network of approved providers.

2. Provisional HGV Licence Application

You need to apply to the DVLA for provisional entitlement to drive the HGV category you are training for. This is done using the D2 application form alongside your completed D4 medical form.

  • Cost: Free (no charge for adding provisional HGV entitlement)
  • Processing time: Typically 2–3 weeks

3. HGV Theory Test

You must pass the HGV theory test before you can take your practical test. The theory test consists of two parts: multiple choice questions and a hazard perception test.

  • Cost: £26 (set by the DVSA)
  • Pass mark: 85 out of 100 for multiple choice; 67 out of 100 for hazard perception
  • Validity: 2 years from the date you pass

For detailed preparation advice, see our HGV theory test guide.

4. Practical Training

This is the largest single cost and the most variable. Practical training prices depend on the licence category, the number of training days, and the provider. At GS Driver Training, our all-inclusive prices for 2026 are:

CourseDurationPrice (inc. VAT)
Cat C1 (7.5 tonne)3–5 daysFrom £1,097
Cat C (Class 2 HGV)5–10 daysFrom £847
Cat C+E (Class 1 HGV)5–10 daysFrom £1,097
Cat C to C+E Upgrade3–5 daysFrom £1,097
Zero to Hero (C + C+E)10–15 daysFrom £2,497

Our prices include DVSA test fees, vehicle hire for the test, and all training materials. Some providers quote lower headline prices but add test fees and vehicle hire as extras, so always check what is included.

5. DVSA Practical Test Fee

If your training provider does not include the test fee in their price, you will need to pay this separately:

  • Weekday test: £115
  • Weekend/evening test: £141

At GS Driver Training, the DVSA test fee is included in all our course prices.

6. Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence)

If you plan to drive professionally (for hire or reward), you must also obtain your initial Driver CPC qualification. This consists of two additional modules:

  • Module 2 (Case Studies): £23 — a computer-based test taken at a DVSA theory test centre
  • Module 4 (Practical Demonstration): £55 — a practical test of your ability to load, secure, and manage a vehicle

GS Driver Training offers CPC Module 4 as an add-on to any training package.

How to Fund Your HGV Training

The cost of HGV training is a significant investment, but there are several ways to make it more affordable:

Skills Bootcamps

The UK government funds Skills Bootcamps for HGV training through the Department for Education. These programmes can cover up to 90% of training costs for eligible candidates. Availability varies by region, so check the gov.uk Skills Bootcamp finder for current opportunities.

Flexible Finance

At GS Driver Training, we offer flexible finance options starting from just £30 per month. This allows you to spread the cost over manageable monthly payments and start training immediately rather than waiting to save the full amount.

Employer Sponsorship

Many logistics and haulage companies will sponsor your training in exchange for a commitment to work for them after qualifying. With the ongoing HGV driver shortage, more employers than ever are willing to invest in new drivers.

Apprenticeships

The Large Goods Vehicle Driver apprenticeship standard allows employers to use their Apprenticeship Levy to fund your training. This is a structured programme that combines on-the-job learning with formal training.

Is HGV Training Worth the Cost?

In short, yes. HGV driving is one of the few careers where you can go from zero experience to earning £28,000–£35,000 within weeks of qualifying. Experienced Class 1 drivers regularly earn £40,000–£55,000 or more. The training investment typically pays for itself within the first 2–3 months of employment.
