How to Become an HGV Driver in the UK: Complete Guide

Becoming an HGV driver in the UK is more straightforward than many people realise. With the right guidance, most candidates can obtain their Class 2 licence within 3 to 6 months and their Class 1 licence within 6 to 12 months. This guide walks you through every step of the process.

Step 1: Check You Meet the Eligibility Requirements

To apply for an HGV licence you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old (21 for Category C+E, unless on a reduced age apprenticeship)
  • Hold a full Category B (car) driving licence
  • Be a UK resident
  • Pass a DVLA Group 2 medical examination (D4 form)

Step 2: Pass the DVLA Group 2 Medical (D4)

Before applying for your provisional HGV licence, you must pass a Group 2 medical examination completed by a DVLA-approved doctor on a D4 form. The examination covers eyesight, cardiovascular health, and general fitness. Cost is typically £50 to £120.

Step 3: Apply for Your HGV Provisional Licence

Complete the D2 application form and post it with your D4 medical form, your current driving licence, and the £34 fee to DVLA at Swansea SA99 1BT. Processing typically takes 3 to 6 weeks.

Step 4: Pass the LGV Theory Test and CPC Case Studies

While waiting for your provisional licence, book and pass the LGV theory test (£26) and the CPC case studies test (£23). Both can be taken on the same day at a DVSA theory test centre.

Step 5: Complete Practical Training

Once your provisional licence arrives, book practical training with a DVSA-approved HGV training provider. Most Class 2 candidates need 5 to 10 training days. GS Driver Training offers flexible training programmes tailored to your experience level.

Step 6: Pass the DVSA Practical Tests (Modules 3 and 4)

Book and pass the DVSA Module 3 practical driving test (£115) and Module 4 CPC practical demonstration test (£55). These are usually taken on the same day.

Step 7: Upgrade to Class 1 (Optional)

After gaining experience on Class 2, many drivers upgrade to Class 1 (C+E) by completing a top-up training course (typically 3 to 7 days) and passing the C+E practical test. This significantly increases earning potential.
