The HGV practical test is the final step before you receive your LGV licence. It is a demanding examination that tests your ability to drive a large goods vehicle safely and professionally. This guide explains exactly what happens on test day, what the examiner is looking for, and how to maximise your chances of passing first time.
What Tests Are Involved in Getting an HGV Licence?
Getting a full HGV licence involves four separate tests:
- LGV theory test (multiple choice and hazard perception)
- CPC case studies test (Module 2)
- DVSA Category C or C+E practical driving test (Module 3)
- CPC practical demonstration test (Module 4)
Modules 3 and 4 are usually taken on the same day. Module 3 is the driving test; Module 4 is a separate demonstration of professional competence.
The DVSA HGV Practical Driving Test (Module 3)
The practical driving test lasts approximately 1 hour 30 minutes and takes place on public roads. The examiner will assess your ability to drive safely and professionally in a range of traffic conditions. The test includes:
- An eyesight check at the start
- Vehicle safety questions (the "show me, tell me" questions)
- Driving on a variety of road types including dual carriageways and town centres
- A reversing exercise (usually reversing into a bay or coupling/uncoupling for C+E)
- Independent driving (following road signs or a sat nav)
Vehicle Safety Questions
The examiner will ask you to identify and explain up to 5 vehicle safety items before the drive begins. These are drawn from a bank of questions covering tyres, brakes, lights, mirrors, steering, fluid levels, and load security. Your training provider will cover all of these in detail during your practical training.
The Reversing Exercise
For Category C (Class 2), the reversing exercise is typically reversing into a loading bay or reversing around a corner. For Category C+E (Class 1), it involves coupling and uncoupling the trailer and reversing the articulated vehicle into a bay. The reversing exercise is one of the most challenging parts of the test for new candidates.
The CPC Practical Demonstration Test (Module 4)
Module 4 is a 30-minute test in which you demonstrate professional driving competence. It covers topics such as:
- Load security and weight distribution
- Tachograph operation
- Daily walkaround checks
- Emergency procedures
- Fuel-efficient driving
Module 4 is assessed by a DVSA examiner and takes place in a vehicle, not in an office. It is not a driving test — you will not be driving during Module 4.
Marking and Pass Criteria
The practical test uses the same marking system as the car test. You are allowed up to 12 minor (driving) faults. Any serious or dangerous fault results in an immediate fail. The most common serious faults are: failure to check mirrors before manoeuvres, incorrect positioning, and errors during the reversing exercise.
HGV Practical Test Costs
The DVSA Module 3 practical test costs £115 on weekdays and £141 on evenings and weekends. The Module 4 CPC demonstration test costs £55. Both are booked through the DVSA website.
Tips for Passing First Time
Allow sufficient training days — do not rush to test before you are ready. Practice the reversing exercise until it is automatic. Ask your instructor to conduct mock tests in the final sessions. Arrive early on test day, check the vehicle before the examiner arrives, and stay calm during the safety questions.
