C1 Driver Training for Student Paramedics

C1 Driver Training for Student Paramedics

Why Student Paramedics Need C1

University paramedic science programmes and NHS ambulance trust student paramedic schemes increasingly require candidates to hold a full Category C1 driving licence before starting their programme or before their first clinical placement. This is because the ambulances used on placement — typically Mercedes Sprinter-based vehicles — have a MAM of between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg, which falls under Category C1. A standard car licence is not sufficient.

When Should I Get My C1 Licence?

The earlier the better. If you are applying to a university paramedic programme or an NHS student paramedic scheme, aim to have your C1 licence in place before submitting your application. This removes a conditional requirement and makes your application stronger. The process takes six to twelve weeks, so start at least three months before your intended application date.

What Does C1 Training Involve?

C1 training involves a D4 medical, provisional C1 entitlement, theory test, practical training, and practical test. For a full step-by-step guide, see: C1 Licence for Paramedics: Step-by-Step UK Guide.

How Much Does It Cost?

The total cost of obtaining a C1 licence typically ranges from £1,400 to £2,800 depending on how much practical training you need. For a full cost breakdown, see: C1 Licence Cost: How Much Is C1 Driver Training?

Can I Get Funding?

Some NHS trusts and universities offer bursaries or funding support for C1 training. Check with your university's student finance team about NHS Learning Support Fund eligibility, and ask your trust's HR department about training bursaries.
