About the Category C+E (Class 1) Licence
The Category C+E licence — also known as a Class 1 HGV licence or artic licence — is the highest-level HGV entitlement in the UK. It allows you to drive articulated lorries (tractor unit + semi-trailer) and any large rigid vehicle towing a trailer over 750 kg MAM. It is the most in-demand HGV licence in the UK, opening doors to long-distance haulage, distribution, tanker, and container transport roles.
To obtain a C+E licence you must already hold a full Category C (Class 2) licence. Training typically takes 3–5 days for existing Cat C holders. For a complete guide to the licence, requirements, uncoupling test, costs, and career prospects, see our Category C+E Licence Explained guide.
