PCV Licence Cost UK 2026: How Much Does a Bus Licence Cost?

Getting a PCV (Passenger Carrying Vehicle) bus or coach licence in the UK costs between £2,200 and £3,500 in 2026, depending on how many training hours you need and which licence category you are applying for. This guide breaks down every cost — D4 medical, theory tests, training, practical test, and Driver CPC — so you can budget accurately before you start.

What Is a PCV Licence?

A PCV licence (also called a Category D licence) is the vocational entitlement that allows you to drive buses, coaches, and large passenger-carrying vehicles for hire or reward in the UK. The full Category D covers vehicles with more than eight passenger seats and no length restriction. Category D1 covers minibuses (nine to sixteen passenger seats, up to 8 metres long). To drive professionally — including for bus companies, coach operators, and school transport — you need a full Category D licence plus a valid Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).

PCV Licence Cost Breakdown 2026

The table below shows every mandatory cost involved in getting a Category D PCV licence from scratch in 2026. All DVLA and DVSA fees are fixed by government; training costs vary by school and candidate experience.

Cost ItemFee (2026)Notes
D4 Group 2 medical£80–£120Required before applying for provisional; must be DVLA-approved doctor
D2 provisional licence applicationFreePostal application only; no online option for vocational licences
Theory test (multiple choice + hazard perception)£26Must pass before booking practical; 100 questions, 85% pass mark
PCV training (Category D)£1,500–£2,500Varies by school and candidate experience; typically 5–10 days

Driver CPC Module 4 (practical demonstration)£55Taken on same day as practical driving test
Total (estimated)£2,200–£3,500Lower end for experienced drivers needing fewer training hours

D4 Medical Cost

The D4 Group 2 medical is the first step for any PCV applicant. You must complete this before applying for your provisional Category D licence. The examination covers eyesight (you must read a number plate at 20 metres), blood pressure, cardiovascular health, diabetes management, and any neurological conditions. The cost is set by individual medical practitioners and typically ranges from £80 to £120. GS Driver Training offers D4 medical appointments through approved doctors — call 01252 447808 to book.

Theory Test Costs

The PCV theory test consists of two parts taken on the same day: a 100-question multiple choice paper (pass mark 85 out of 100) and a hazard perception video test. The combined DVSA fee is £26. Most candidates study for four to six weeks using the official DVSA PCV theory test book and practice apps. The test is taken at a DVSA theory test centre and must be passed before you can book your practical test.

PCV Training Costs

Training is the largest variable cost. A full Category D course typically takes five to ten days of behind-the-wheel instruction, depending on your existing driving experience. Candidates who already hold a D1 minibus licence and have driven minibuses professionally will generally need fewer hours than those starting from a car licence. Expect to pay between £1,500 and £2,500 for training at a reputable school. GS Driver Training offers Category D PCV courses in Surrey with experienced DVSA-approved instructors and modern vehicles.

Practical Test Cost

The DVSA practical driving test for Category D costs £320. The test includes a vehicle safety 'show me, tell me' section, a reversing exercise, and an on-road drive of approximately 60 minutes. The examiner will assess your ability to drive safely, manage passengers, and handle the vehicle in a range of traffic conditions including dual carriageways, roundabouts, and bus stops.

Driver CPC Costs

All professional bus and coach drivers must hold a Driver CPC qualification. For new licence holders, this involves passing Module 2 (case studies, £23) and Module 4 (practical demonstration, £55). Module 4 is typically taken on the same day as your practical driving test. Once you hold your initial CPC, you must complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years to keep your Driver Qualification Card (DQC) valid. Periodic training costs approximately £300–£500 per five-year cycle.

Category D1 vs Full Category D: Cost Difference

If you only need to drive minibuses (nine to sixteen seats, up to 8 metres), a D1 licence is sufficient and costs less to obtain — typically £1,200 to £2,000 all-in. Full Category D covers all buses and coaches with no length restriction and is required for bus company employment. Most professional bus drivers train for the full Category D from the outset, as the additional cost over D1 is modest and opens significantly more employment opportunities.

Can I Get Funding for PCV Training?

Several funding routes are available for PCV training in 2026. The Department for Transport's Bus Driver Recruitment and Retention Fund has provided grants to bus operators to fund driver training — if you are being sponsored by a bus company, your employer may cover all or part of the cost. Some candidates use the Government's Advanced Learner Loan scheme. GS Driver Training can advise on current funding options — call 01252 447808 for up-to-date information.

How Long Does PCV Training Take?

From starting your D4 medical to holding your full Category D licence typically takes eight to sixteen weeks. The D4 medical and D2 application take one to two weeks; DVLA processing of your provisional takes three to four weeks; theory test preparation takes four to six weeks; and training and practical test booking takes two to four weeks. Fast-track routes that compress training into an intensive block can reduce the total timeline to six to eight weeks for experienced drivers.

Is a PCV Licence Worth the Cost?

Bus and coach drivers in the UK earn between £25,000 and £35,000 per year, with London bus drivers typically earning £32,000 to £40,000. The investment of £2,200 to £3,500 is typically recovered within three to four months of employment. Demand for qualified PCV drivers remains strong, with bus operators across the UK actively recruiting. The licence is also a gateway to coach touring, airport transfers, and school transport roles — all of which offer competitive pay and varied working patterns.
