Can You Renew an HGV Licence Online?
One of the most common questions from HGV drivers approaching a renewal milestone is whether the process can be completed online. The short answer is: not fully. As of 2026, renewing your HGV (or C1, D1, or PCV) entitlement still requires a paper application and a physical D4 medical examination. This guide explains exactly what can and cannot be done online, and how to complete the renewal process as efficiently as possible.
What Can Be Done Online?
The DVLA's online services allow you to do the following related to your driving licence:
- View your driving licence information and entitlements
- Renew your standard car (Category B) licence photocard (every 10 years)
- Update your address on your licence
- Check your penalty points and endorsements
- Share your driving licence information with employers or hire companies
However, renewing large vehicle entitlements (C, C+E, C1, D, D1, and their trailer variants) cannot currently be completed entirely online. The DVLA requires a paper application (D47 form) and an original D4 medical certificate to be submitted by post.
Why Can't HGV Renewals Be Done Fully Online?
The requirement for a physical D4 medical certificate is the primary reason the process cannot be completed online. The D4 is a legal document completed by a registered doctor, and the DVLA requires the original certificate — not a scan or digital copy. Until the DVLA introduces a digital medical verification system, the paper-based process will remain in place.
The Renewal Process Step by Step
While the final submission must be by post, you can prepare much of the process in advance:
- Book your D4 medical — at least 8 weeks before your licence expires. Use a GP, occupational health clinic, or specialist HGV medical provider.
- Complete the D4 medical examination — the doctor completes the form; you receive the original certificate.
- Download the D47 form — from the DVLA website (gov.uk/renew-lorry-bus-licence).
- Complete the D47 form — enter your personal details, licence number, and the category you are renewing.
- Send by post — D47 form + D4 certificate to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BT. There is no fee for renewal at the standard age milestones.
- Receive your updated licence — typically within 1–3 weeks of the DVLA receiving your application.
Can I Check My Renewal Status Online?
Yes. Once you have submitted your D47 application, you can check the status of your application using the DVLA's online driver licence enquiry service. You will need your licence number and National Insurance number to access this service.
What About the Photocard Renewal?
Your driving licence photocard must be renewed every 10 years (to keep the photo up to date), regardless of your large vehicle entitlements. The photocard renewal can be done online via the DVLA website and costs £14. If your photocard renewal coincides with your HGV entitlement renewal, you can submit both at the same time using the D47 form — the DVLA will issue a new photocard with the updated entitlement.
Keeping Your Licence Valid
Missing a renewal deadline means you cannot legally drive a large vehicle until the renewal is processed. Set a reminder in your phone or calendar for 90 days before your renewal date. GS Driver Training recommends booking your D4 medical as soon as your reminder triggers — availability at popular clinics can be limited, especially in January and September.
