Overview
The C1 theory test is a mandatory stage in obtaining a Category C1 driving licence. It must be passed before you can sit the C1 practical driving test. The test consists of two parts: a multiple-choice section and a hazard perception section. Both must be passed in the same sitting. This guide explains exactly what to expect and how to prepare effectively.
Theory Test Format
| Part | Questions | Pass Mark | Time Allowed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice | 100 questions from the LGV/PCV question bank | 85 out of 100 | 115 minutes |
| Hazard perception | 19 video clips (one clip has 2 developing hazards) | 67 out of 100 | No fixed time limit |
The multiple-choice section covers the Highway Code, vehicle safety, driving best practice, rules for LGV drivers, and environmental considerations. The hazard perception section tests your ability to identify developing hazards in video clips of real driving scenarios.
What Topics Are Covered?
The C1 theory test draws from the same LGV question bank as the full Category C (Class 2 HGV) theory test. Key topic areas include:
- The Highway Code — road signs, markings, rules, and priorities
- Vehicle safety — daily checks, braking systems, tyres, and loads
- Driving in adverse conditions — fog, ice, rain, and motorway driving
- Tachograph rules — although C1 vehicles are not always subject to tachograph regulations, questions may appear
- Environmental considerations — fuel efficiency, emissions, and eco-driving
- Accident procedures and first aid
- Drivers' hours and rest requirements
How to Book the C1 Theory Test
The C1 theory test is booked through the DVSA website at gov.uk/book-theory-test. You must have provisional C1 entitlement on your licence before booking. The test costs £26 and is available at DVSA test centres across the UK. Test centres are typically busy, so book as early as possible once your provisional entitlement is confirmed.
How to Prepare
Most candidates need two to four weeks of regular study to pass the C1 theory test comfortably. Recommended resources include:
- The DVSA's official The Official DVSA Guide to Driving Goods Vehicles
- The Highway Code (available free at gov.uk)
- Theory Test Pro — an online practice platform with the full LGV question bank
- DVSA's official hazard perception practice videos
Focus particularly on the hazard perception section — many candidates underestimate its difficulty. The key is to click as soon as you see a hazard developing, not when it has fully developed. Clicking too early or too late reduces your score.
What Happens If I Fail?
If you fail either part of the theory test, you must retake the entire test (both parts). There is no limit on the number of retakes, but you must wait at least three clear working days between attempts. The retake fee is £26. Use the examiner's feedback to identify which topic areas need more revision.
