Do You Need C1 to Drive a Horsebox?
Whether you need a C1 licence to drive a horsebox depends on the vehicle's maximum authorised mass (MAM). If the MAM exceeds 3,500 kg, you need a C1 licence. Horseboxes carrying four or more horses, or large coachbuilt horseboxes, often exceed 3,500 kg. This is one of the most common licence compliance issues in the equestrian community — many horsebox owners are unaware that their vehicle requires a C1 licence.
Common Horsebox Types and Licence Requirements
| Horsebox Type | Typical MAM | Licence Required |
|---|---|---|
| 2-horse transit-based horsebox | 3,000–3,500 kg | Category B if under 3,500 kg |
| 3–4 horse coachbuilt horsebox | 3,500–5,500 kg | C1 |
| 5–6 horse coachbuilt horsebox | 5,500–7,500 kg | C1 |
| Large commercial horsebox | Over 7,500 kg | Category C (Class 2 HGV) |
Always check the V5C registration document for the MAM before driving. Driving a vehicle over 3,500 kg without the correct licence is a criminal offence and will invalidate your insurance.
