What Is a 7.5 Tonne Licence?
A "7.5 tonne licence" is the informal name for a Category C1 driving licence entitlement. Category C1 covers vehicles with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg — and 7,500 kg (7.5 tonnes) is the upper weight limit of the category. The two terms are used interchangeably in the transport and logistics industry, though the official DVLA term is Category C1.
What Vehicles Require a 7.5 Tonne Licence?
Any vehicle with a MAM of between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg requires a C1 licence. Common examples include:
- 7.5 tonne delivery trucks used by supermarkets, furniture retailers, and logistics companies
- Ambulances and patient transport vehicles
- Large motorhomes and A-class campervans
- Coachbuilt horseboxes
- Tipper trucks and flatbed vehicles in the 7.5 tonne category
- Refrigerated vans over 3,500 kg
Why Do Delivery Companies Use 7.5 Tonne Vehicles?
7.5 tonne vehicles offer a significant payload advantage over 3.5 tonne vans while remaining below the 7,500 kg threshold that would require a full HGV licence. They are widely used for last-mile delivery, furniture and white goods delivery, and general haulage where the volume or weight of the load exceeds what a 3.5 tonne van can carry.
How to Get a 7.5 Tonne Licence
The process is identical to obtaining any C1 licence: D4 medical, provisional C1 entitlement, C1 theory test, practical C1 training, and C1 practical driving test. For a full step-by-step guide, see: How to Get a C1 Licence: Step-by-Step Guide.
